Engine failure 18,000 mile two years old , Hyundai corporate office no help . It like a bad relationship you can no longer trust her .... took a $6,000.00 hit and traded it in . Sadly could take a chance it was going brake down again , and who wants a rebuild for an engine

Big Dissappointmnet

I bought a 2017 Sonata Sport back in April. Two months after getting it, it began to give me problems. First, instead of going into reverse it would go forward. Something unusual for a brand new car. Second, while I was trying to park and go to reverse the shifter got stuck, and the lights that turn on next to the shifter turned off, so did the camera and the screen at the front. I couldn't move the car at all because the break was also stuck. This happened 5 months after getting it. Now, I'm in the situation where the car decelerates, similar to pressing the break, while on the highway and having all the lights next to the shifter turn off and the screen in the front. Surely I was not expecting to have so many problems with a brand new car. If I could I would give this car a negative 100. This is the worst purchase I've made. And the dealer doesn't even know whats wrong with the car. This is not only a car issue but as well a safety issue. I left my old car for a new because it was causing me problems and now I'm back to square one. I must definitely DO NOT recommend this car to anyone. It might just be bad luck, but I will not rely on this company ever again.

We just bought the SE model from a rental car sale company, although I can hardly tell it is not new. It accelerates so quietly and quickly that you have to watch your speedometer. We had rented this same model two years back for a little road trip and were really impressed with the comfort for four adults, three who are tall. We took it on winding mountain roads and to narrow coastal lanes and it handled perfectly. The interior is attractive and the electronics interface is friendly and not annoying. I love driving this car.

Great car. Hyundai has really stepped up their game. Honda and Toyota are the best and Hyundai is right next to them. When you factor in price and what you get for the money, I think they pass Honda and Toyota.

The "6.4 Powerstoke" of Gasoline Car Motors

Anthony , 01/31/2025
2017 Hyundai Sonata SE PZEV 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 6A)

As i referred to and if you are familiar with a 6.4 Diesel motor from ford these motors from Hyundai are in the ways of a gas motor as problematic. As most know of Campaign 953 where the connecting rods go in the motor. This is a Recall and covered by the manufacturer however for them to do any testing on the engine you need to have the check engine light blinking. In the case of my cousin who owned a 2011 that did not happen and his died in the middle of the road . The 2017 that my mother owns has a separate issue that they do not recognize or take accountability for is a issue with burning oil. More common in Tuscans it is prevalent and something im dealing with in the 2017 Sonata. Basic Break Down i noticed and felt misfiring and low power mostly when going up hill. Driving away from red lights without a jolt became harder which may be unrelated but it seemed harder to ease from a red light. The oil Change was last done in October of 2024 the oil light came on January. 8th 2025. There was no oil on the stick ! putting a 5 full quarts in and beginning to research the issue i thought i would covered and eligible for a new motor. Reading online i couldn't find a straight answer of what was covered. I brought the car into the dealer which is when i was informed a light needed to be on to test for the connecting rod issue ... at least to have it under warranty otherwise it was $150 and from what was going on no one thought nor did think that was the issue at the time. The dealer topped the car off on January 10th at a full 5 quarts. as of yesterday January 30th so 1 day shy of 3 weeks there may be 1 quart left. The oil was on the stick however it was just on the bend on the very bottom. So realizing this issue is separate from the bearing rod recall from what i was told by 3 separate dealers is this issue is on me. They can do a series of tests one of which will 99% not work and cost $800 and if it doesn't work that determines you need a new motor and that is a cost on you 100% so im told. Now obviously if you bought some type of warranty these details could be different in your situation. We bought the car second hand from a rental company so theres grey area in the warranty being transferable with certain aspects of the car. The 100,000 Mille warranty is also a grey area as we are at 97,500 and they want nothing to do with the oil burning issue unless we pay for diagnostic , series of testing and in the end a new motor. Why a new motor? In the end this issue will not only burn more gas and need constant oil added which are both costly it will in time clog the catalytic convertor and a list of issues one can only imagine from there. There is no "Fixing it" the lower end of the motor is gone and can not be saved. The upper part of the motor is what hyundai covers under recall. You may read other people having different experiences with this issues however i haven't read any who have had it covered. So now today still currently owning the car we will need to sell it and get something else to avoid a $6,000-$8,000 motor Replacement. Anyone who owns this car i would advise to be aware of what its doing and get rid of it if this issue arises. In total i would sell the car all together with the number of issues the engines have. If you are looking to buy one of these cars needless to say if you are still reading do not waste your money even with a "extended Warranty" as those are fine print scams often and do not cover labor or certain aspects of things. In the case of my cousin he got a free motor replacement for the bearing rod issue. After that the Motor has a lifetime warranty but im not sure what that means if its 100% covered no matter what cause mostly likely it isn't. Like any large corporation they are not gonna claim responsibility for things they dont need to and as a consumer we all should know no Corporation is exempt from that.

I also own a 2007 with 120,000 miles and not one mechanical break down. I have only done general maintenance to my 2007 and it is still runs great. For the 2017 I purchased my wife it is a big improvement over my 2007 in every way. Also, not one mechanical issue in 3 year sand 56000 miles. Knock on wood.

MY TURBO SPORT

Jeanne, 04/27/2019

I drove the Standard Sonata, and then drove the Turbo Sport Sonata, the one I found online at Edmunds. OH MY what a difference. I like the standard Sonata for comfort and controls. However, it did not have the punch to accelerate that I like to get out of the way or get going!! The Turbo Sport did the trick !! It handles great, I took it down a winding road to test drive, and it hugged the road, accelerated like a race car ( at least for me ) it was so smooth. The seats are partial leather bucket with lumbar support and heated. I do not have all the technology gadgets, but I have enough for me. I love the car. It is comfortable to drive, it evens out the bumps in the road, and it goes!!! The gas mileage is great, and I have iPhone Car play, comfortable seats, so I can cruise for a long time comfortably.

Not worth the money

In 2017, I purchased a new Hyundai Sonata Sport. I loved my car! The smooth and fast ride was the main reason I chose this car. In September 2019, my car started slowing down while I was driving. The engine light came on and the car continued to slow down. I managed to pull into a parking lot without getting into an accident. The dealership arranged to get my car towed to their location. They replaced the engine with a new one. It’s only three months later and I’m experiencing the same problem again. I took my car back to the dealer and the diagnostic test showed no signs of a problem. They reset the engine and to no avail the same issues immediately occurred. I’m trying to be proactive by addressing my concerns. It’s a scary feeling not knowing when my car is going to shut off in traffic. It’s too dangerous. My car is only 2 years old. Hyundai should be more experienced in fixing this problem, especially since my car isn’t the first car with this problem. At this point I feel my car isn’t worth my hard earned money.
