Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsA hint of wheelspin, and it feels strong especially in midrange, but the numbers don't support my impressions. Medium-fast but smooth upshifts at redline, and the manual shift mode won't hold a gear, so same results in manual mode.
Braking commentsLike the Cruze, the Elantra offers good fade resistance, but it eventually did begin to fade. Moderately firm pedal, straight and trustworthy. Just a little odor after repeated stops.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Again, not much traditional steering feel here. It feels manufactured to get heavier with speed/load. With stability control, tires begin to squeal as understeer becomes pretty pronounced. ESC on simply pulls the throttle back to avoid understeer. Slalom: Crazy-quick steering reaction, but a delay between input and actual yaw change. It took a few passes to learn how to deal with the delay. Also, I was pleased to find I could use the throttle to change yaw, but eventually, the rear tires refused to cooperate with the program and oversteer became the limit. ESC on was subtle about bleeding throttle and dabbing brakes, but it was obviously well below the limits of the chassis.
