Overview

The Ford F-250 Super Duty has been fully redesigned for 2023, with fresh styling inside and out, an updated powertrain lineup, and a whole host of new tech to help with towing, hauling and more. The new truck isn't vastly different than before, with Ford focusing on refinement and making driving such a large vehicle even easier. That's good as trucks are being tasked with doing more than ever.

If you just looked at the outside, you'd assume the 2023 is merely a cosmetic update of the current truck, with similar bodywork and a light revision of the grille and the headlights and taillights. But the interior has been completely redone, though it bears a resemblance to the current F-150 (which was all-new for 2021). The Super Duty is still suitable as a work truck; just get it with vinyl floors, vinyl upholstery and a bench seat. But it can also be a luxury truck with available two-tone leather upholstery; heated, ventilated and massaging seats; and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

There are plenty of other changes, too, with a lot of focus on improving or enhancing the Super Duty's tech. That doesn't just mean a bigger touchscreen display. Some of the trick towing features originally found on the current F-150 have made their way to the heavy-duty models. For example, the new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system can automatically back up the truck to a trailer with a ball hitch and position it right underneath, which makes hooking up a trailer without a spotter exponentially easier. There's also a system that allows you to input the size and weight of your trailer and the truck will let you know if your load is properly balanced based on the trailer's tongue weight. The truck can also weigh how much payload you've put in the bed and how close you are to the max rating.

This is a tough class of vehicles, with strong competition in the form of the Ram 2500 as well as the twins from GM, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD. All of these trucks are fairly close on specs and capabilities, with the class leader seemingly changing every time one of them decides to add a little more torque to their diesel engines. Ford's Super Duty lineup was already strong, but all of the changes for 2023 help making owning one even easier.

How does the F-250 Super Duty drive? The F-250 we tested had the high-output 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8. With a quoted 1,200 lb-ft of torque on tap, the F-250 has no shortage of grunt. It hit 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, a bit slower than the last F-250 we tested but still competitive for the class. The powertrain is smooth, and the 10-speed transmission never feels out of step or in the wrong gear. Even when towing or hauling, we don't expect the F-250 to struggle or feel overwhelmed.

The F-250's steering and handling are average for an heavy-duty pickup, which is to say soft and a bit disconnected. The steering wheel is easy to turn but the truck doesn't respond much when you do. You have to do a lot of wheel spinning to to maneuver the truck in a parking lot, for example. The F-250 leans in corners, but it's composed enough that you don't get tossed around on tight roads.

Comfort

How comfortable is the F-250 Super Duty? Comfort in pickup trucks these days is leagues better than it was even just a handful of years ago. While we wouldn't go so far as to call it luxurious or plush, the F-250 — especially in the upper-level trims like our King Ranch test vehicle — is comfortable on the street, even on longer drives. The seats are a bit flat, but we found them soft and well padded. We had no issues with sore backs or behinds on longer drives. It's much the same in the rear, with a flat but comfortable bench that can be folded to provide more cargo area. The ride comfort is on the firm side of comfortable, but it's right on for what we expect in this class.

The climate control system blows cold, and the heated seats get toasty quickly. No one really does either like an American automaker. The controls for the climate system are a bit disappointing as some settings and readouts (like the cabin temperature) are located in the touchscreen, but that's our only major complaint. We found the F-250 to be reasonably quiet on the road too. Yes, there's a little bit of diesel clatter, but it's subtle and never loud enough that you can't have a conversation. Wind and road noise is decently muted, though the tires do produce a bit of noise at highway speeds.

Interior

How’s the interior? The F-250's interior is a definite improvement over the last-generation Super Duty. It's not been wholly transformed, but small changes to the control layout make everything easier to see and reach. There are still dedicated controls for the radio and climate settings, so it's easy to adjust the temperature without taking your eyes off the road. Some controls are tied to the touchscreen, but the system is responsive and the menus are well organized. As a whole, figuring out where everything is and how the features work is straightforward.

The cabin is spacious, too, with enough room for an NBA starting roster inside. Headroom, legroom and shoulder room shouldn't be an issue in either row. The tall ride height makes getting in and out a real climb, even with our King Ranch's standard retractable running boards. Once you're inside, though, adjustable pedals and good movement for the seat and wheel make it easy to find a comfortable driving position.

Outward visibility is solid, too, at least for a heavy-duty truck. There are blind spots, but most trims come with an array of sensors and cameras to help visibility. Ford even offers a camera and parking sensors that function when the tailgate is down, like when you're hauling a longer load. An available surround-view camera and additional cameras for the trailer further aid the driver.

How’s the tech? The latest Super Duty is loaded with in-car tech and some solid driver aids. Almost every trim comes standard with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The navigation works well, with clear, easy-to-read maps and turn-by-turn directions displaying in the digital instrument cluster and head-up display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all trims, and there are plenty of USB ports for charging. Some trims come with a pair of 120-volt household-style power outlets too. Our King Ranch model was equipped with an excellent 18-speaker B&O audio system. It's among the best we've experienced in a pickup truck.

There's a whole plethora of driver aids available for the F-250, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, a surround-view camera system and automatic emergency braking. It's all simple to use and works well in practice. Adaptive cruise control holds good gaps and can bring you to a complete stop, and we didn't notice any false readings for the emergency braking or collision warning systems.

Towing and Storage

How are the towing and storage? As you might expect from a heavy-duty pickup, payload and towing ratings for the F-250 are excellent. Max capacity is rated at 4,268 pounds (regular cab with the base gasoline V8), though most configurations are rated between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds. Towing tops out at 22,000 pounds for a conventional trailer or 23,000 pounds with a gooseneck. Most configurations are between 14,000 and 20,000 pounds. Those are all impressive figures for the class, though it's always neck-and-neck among this group of pickups.

Cargo space and storage inside the cabin are equally solid. There are a seemingly endless number of bins and cubbies for small items like sunglasses, phones and more. Everywhere you seem to look offers a small pocket of some sort. We're very impressed with the cupholders. There's lots of them, and the ones up front are large enough for wide water bottles. The Ford lacks the Ram's fold-out panel to make a flat load floor in the rear, but the seats still fold out of the way to open up a sizable space for in-cabin storage. The folding split-configuration rear seat means you can get a passenger in the back, too, provided you don't need all of the space. Installing a car seat should be pretty straightforward, though the truck's height might pose an issue for some.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA doesn't require heavy-duty trucks like the Super Duty to have certified EPA fuel-economy estimates. That goes for trucks from Chevy, GMC and Ram too. With our truck's high-output diesel V8, we saw about 14.5 mpg in typical city driving. That's about what we've seen in the competition, though it's a lot worse than we've seen from light-duty trucks like Ford's own F-150.

Is the F-250 Super Duty a good value? There's no getting around it: The Ford F-250 is an expensive vehicle. Base prices are on par with rivals from Chevrolet and Ram, though it's very easy to add a few options to send the price skyward. Our well-equipped King Ranch test truck packed an as-tested price of about $95,000. Other heavy-duty trucks can get pricey, too, but the Ford doesn't look great by comparison. That said, build quality is very solid, with excellent fit and finish and a genuinely nice interior on those high-spec trucks.

The warranty is average for this class. Ford includes a three-year/36,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty, though models with diesel powertrains get a five-year/100,000-mile warranty. Ford also includes five years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance.

Wildcard

For better or worse, the new Super Duty looks a heck of a lot like the old Super Duty both inside and out, though the changes to the grille, lighting and interior do a lot to keep the truck feeling fresh. Still, it's not a particularly striking design, and even the tough-looking Tremor package pales in comparison to the Ram 2500 Power Wagon or GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X. And if you're looking for fun in your pickup truck, we suggest going electric with the Ford F-150 Lightning or Rivian R1T. There are few thrills to be had behind the Super Duty's steering wheel.

Which F-250 Super Duty does Edmunds recommend?

While the F-250 received some major changes for 2023, we still think the Lariat trim is the one to get. It has more standard features than the XL and XLT trims and is available with a wider array of options and configurations for not a ton more cash. That includes both extended- and crew-cab configurations as well as features like automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and a larger infotainment screen.

Ford F-250 Super Duty models

The 2023 F-250 Super Duty is available in six trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. Availability of bed and cab configurations varies by trim, but generally the F-250 is available in regular-cab, extended-cab (SuperCab) and crew-cab (SuperCrew) configurations paired with either a 6.75-foot or an 8-foot bed. Starting this year, four-wheel drive is standard on all but the base XL trim, though it can be optioned on that trim too. Keep reading for more information on the F-250's engines, standard features and major options.

The F-250 is available with gasoline and diesel-powered V8 engines. The base gasoline engine, a 6.8-liter V8, makes 400 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque, while the upsized 7.3-liter V8 makes 430 hp and 485 lb-ft. The turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel V8 is available in two versions. The standard one makes 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, while a high-output variant cranks things up to 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic.

XL
The base F-250 Super Duty XL is fairly light on features, though the relatively no-frills feature list makes it great for work-truck duty. Standard equipment highlights include:

Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. Ram 2500

Although it debuted just a few years ago, the Ram 2500 is now the oldest truck in this segment. It doesn't offer as many engine options as the Ford, but we like both of the Ram's available powertrains. The interior is comfortable, spacious and nicer inside than you might expect from a heavy-duty truck. We also like Ram's in-car tech. There are also some clever storage options, too, including lockable compartments built into the bed.

Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

As with the Ram 2500, the Silverado 2500HD lines up well against the F-250. It doesn't offer as many powertrains options, but the gas and diesel offerings are strong. We prefer the Ford's interior to the Chevy's because the latter feels a bit cheap by comparison. That said, the Silverado is slightly less expensive than its crosstown rival. We like the Silverado's spacious cabin, but we found that visibility from the driver's seat was lacking compared to rivals.

Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. GMC Sierra 2500HD

It's easiest to think of the Sierra as a reskinned version of the Silverado 2500, and as such it has most of the same pros and cons when compared to the F-250. The cabin is spacious, the powertrains are strong, and there's some solid in-car tech to help with towing and hauling. But the interior feels cheap and dated compared to the Ford despite the GMC's higher base price. There's a lot to like with the Sierra, but we think the Ford is a better pick in this segment.

What is the Super Duty?

The Ford F-150 is one of the best-selling vehicles in the history of the world. But for towing seriously heavy loads or carrying extra payload, the standard F-150 won't always be enough and that's when it's time to turn to Ford's Super Duty lineup. It includes the F-250, F-350, F-450 and even the F-550 grades but those last two are mostly limited to commercial applications, so our testing and impressions will apply solely to the first two models.

And don't let Ford's weird name confuse you: Super Duty is just a fancy way of saying heavy duty; it doesn't mean any more or less (somewhere Don Draper is smiling). For 2023, Ford's heavy-duty truck is fully redesigned and debuts with a fresh interior and two new engines, though the real stars of this makeover are a suite of technologies that make the Super Duty easier to live, tow and haul with than ever before.

What's under the Super Duty's hood?

Gone is the long-serving 6.2-liter V8 that was paired to a dated six-speed transmission. For 2023, a new 6.8-liter gasoline V8 is the base engine, and it makes 400 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque and that represents an increase of 15 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque versus the old base engine. The optional gas engine is the same, a 7.3-liter V8 that makes 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque.

The 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 returns with its prodigious 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, but if that isn't enough for you there's now a new high-output variant of that engine that bumps output up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. This high-output version is now the king of the hill for 2023 heavy-duty truck bragging rights as it tops the max output from the available diesel engines in the Chevy Silverado 3500HD and Ram 3500.

The Super Duty's engines are all mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Both the F-250 and F-350 will be offered in rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations, with a variety of axle ratios and single or dual rear wheels on the F-350 and above.

How does the F-Series Super Duty drive?

Our time behind the wheel of the Super Duty only included stints with the 7.3-liter gas engine and the new high-output diesel engine. Both engines are vastly overqualified for any sort of on-road driving, providing easy power and smooth shifts via the 10-speed automatic. Without a load in the back, there's plenty of acceleration around town and you can get up to highway speeds easily.

With these vehicles designed primarily with work in mind, there isn't much that can be done to prevent them from driving like you'd think a big truck would: barely any steering feel, some bounciness out of the leaf springs in the rear, and softness in the front suspension. But this isn't really a demerit. To change these things would require compromises in other areas that allow this big truck to do big truck things.

How comfortable is the F-Series Super Duty?

The front seats in the higher trim levels (King Ranch and up) are swathed in leather and very comfortable with a lot of support. Crew-cab models also come with a very large back seat that could easily fit two adults for a long trip, or three in a pinch.

Ride quality isn't the best, but again this is a big truck. It feels steady at highway speeds, and the cabin doesn't get too noisy unless you've got one of the diesel powertrains under the hood and you get into the throttle. Doing so fills the cabin with that signature diesel engine growl but it dissipates as you ease off.

How's the Super Duty's interior?

Entry-level XL models get an 8-inch center touchscreen, while upper trim levels are treated to a 12-inch touchscreen. The physical gauges in the instrument cluster are gone and replaced with the customizable, fully digital instrument panel on higher trims, too. The interior gets steadily nicer as you move up the trim ladder, culminating in the top-spec Limited model. New options like the max-recline seats from the F-150 and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system help elevate the big truck's interior. Work truck models with a bench seat up front feature a foldout flat surface that can be used as a small desk or table while on the go.

What new towing assist features does it have?

Here is where the Super Duty's redesign pays the most dividends. Ford put a lot of thought into trying to make this Super Duty's technology ease a lot of the pain points of truck ownership.

According to Ford, 90% of heavy-duty pickup owners use their trucks to tow, and the Super Duty has added a few new technologies to make this easier than ever before. Most of them debuted on the F-150 previously but we think they make even more sense for the Super Duty. For example, the new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system can automatically back up the truck to a trailer with a ball hitch and position it right underneath, which makes hooking up a trailer without a spotter exponentially easier. There's also a system that allows you to input the size/weight of your trailer and the truck will let you know if your load is properly balanced based on the trailer's tongue weight.

Ford's Pro Power Onboard system adds outlets for power tools and accessories in the bed of the truck as well as inside the cabin. While it can provide 2.0 kilowatts of power, it pales in comparison to the 7.2-kW maximum output of the F-150 with the available hybrid powertrain. Until Ford decides to make an electrified Super Duty … no hybrid, no access to full power.

For the cargo bed, the Onboard Scales feature measures how much payload you've put in the bed and tells you how close to the truck's maximum rating you're at. This information is displayed on the truck's touchscreen as well as by a progressive, bar-like illumination of the taillights. There's also a new tailgate camera. Ford has mounted a camera and parking sensors on top of the tailgate so that even when you lower the tailgate (say, to hold a long payload item), the 360-degree surround-view and rearview cameras still work.

New technology features for the cabin, too

Another nice addition is 5G connectivity that's standard across the range. Ford says the new Super Duty is the first pickup in the U.S. to feature 5G. An onboard Qualcomm modem taps into AT&T's network and provides Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 10 devices. Ford knows that its customers use the Super Duty to work, so the automaker decided to make it a mobile office as well as something that's tough enough for life on various job sites.

There's plenty of available new safety tech, too. Adaptive cruise control with lane centering now works all the day down to a stop, and there is both front and rear automatic braking as well. There's also a new trailer theft alert feature, which will send a notification through the FordPass mobile app to alert the owner if a trailer has been disconnected after the truck has been locked.

How much can the Super Duty tow and haul?

The F-250 offers a maximum payload rating of 4,268 pounds, achieved with a regular-cab model with the base gasoline engine. Most versions of the truck offer somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds of payload capacity. For towing, the F-250 tops out at 22,000 pounds with a conventional trailer or 23,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer.
