The Z06 makes the most of the C8 Corvette's mid-engine platform. It offers superlative acceleration and a spine-tingling engine howl for a fraction of the price of an Italian exotic. Handling is also on par with any fancy import from Europe. The expected Corvette downsides such as tricky entry and exit still apply, but overall the Z06 is deeply impressive.

Overview
Since the Chevrolet Corvette's debut in the 1950s, it's become one of America's most successful sports cars and a household name. The current C8 model is a mid-engine masterpiece boasting exotic styling and performance that's on par with vehicles two to three times its price. For 2023, Chevrolet introduced the more powerful and higher-performing Z06. It's currently the only high-performance variant that's offered above the base Stingray model.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2dr Coupe w/1LZ (5.5L 8cyl 8AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.92 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

The centerpiece of the new Z06 is the all-new LT6 5.5-liter V8 engine. It's not turbocharged or supercharged, and it's actually smaller than the standard 6.2-liter V8, but it packs some race-inspired technology. The Z06's V8 features a lightweight flat-plane crankshaft that's normally found on high-dollar exotic cars, and it has a sky-high redline of 8,600 rpm. That's 2,100 rpm higher than the standard Corvette Stingray's. Those enchantments, among others, allow the engine to generate a whopping 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
But that's just the beginning. When compared to the standard Corvette, the Z06 also includes larger and wider wheels, gripper tires, performance-oriented adaptive suspension dampers and larger Brembo brakes. It also has distinct front and rear styling and a shorter drive ratio for quicker acceleration. Speaking of acceleration, Chevy claims the Z06 can blast from 0 to 60 mph in an astonishing 2.6 seconds.
If you're in the market for a highly capable sports car, the Corvette's blend of performance, comfort and price makes it hard to pass up. And if you want more, the Z06's Ferrari-like capability is well worth its six-figure price tag. When comparing performance numbers, the Corvette can compete against more expensive vehicles, but if you want to stay in its price range, take a look at the BMW M4 and Porsche Cayman. If you have a larger budget, consider the Z06, and make sure to check out the Porsche 911. To help you decide, read our test team's full review of the Corvette in the Edmunds Expert Rating below.
What's it like to live with?
Edmunds bought a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette, and so far we have put over 25,000 miles on it. We love its performance and comfort, and surprisingly for a V8-powered sports car, its average mpg. We've kept track of its maintenance costs and share what we think of its technology and what it's like as a daily driver. Performance
9.0/10
How does the Corvette drive? The Z06's 670-horsepower V8 means business. Even on a relatively cool day without a lot of traction, our test Z06 rocketed from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and cleared the quarter mile in 11.1 seconds. Getting those numbers required us to use the Z06's sophisticated Performance Traction Management software to tame the Z06's ferocious power, but the results speak for themselves.
Getting the most from the Z06's tires also requires trust in the stability control systems, but the results are even more impressive. Equipped with the Z06 Ultimate Performance package, which includes the Z07 suspension and ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, our test car matched the Porsche GT3 for the highest number we've ever recorded on our skidpad: a neck-stretching 1.25 g.
In our testing, the optional carbon-ceramic brakes were less impressive, stopping the Z06 from 60 mph in 104 feet. That's about 13 feet longer than the 911 GT3, and the Z06's brake pedal felt wooden and didn't return the critical feedback you expect from a supercar. That said, the brakes held up under hard track use just fine.
Away from the track, the Z06 is docile enough to be driven around town without issue. The transmission shifts quickly and smoothly every time.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the Corvette? The Corvette Z06 manages to retain much of the standard Stingray's high levels of comfort. That's impressive, especially when you consider the added performance The Z06's retuned adaptive suspension offers a fairly compliant ride on the highway but can also stiffen up for even the most demanding track use. One area where the Z06 can't match the less aggressive iterations of Corvette is interior noise. While the multi-mode exhaust settings can provide a drone-free highway experience, elevated levels of road and tire noise take their toll after a few hours behind the wheel.
Our test car was equipped with the Competition sport bucket seats, and we found them more than up to the task of track driving but slightly too intense for street use. There are less track-focused seating options available, so be realistic and keep that in mind when you buy your Corvette.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Corvette's driver-focused cabin is certainly eye-catching. Unfortunately, usability suffers somewhat. The small climate control buttons can be hard to figure out and remember, and the walled-off sectioning means the front passenger might feel left out since there is little they can interact with.
It's a bit more difficult to get into the Corvette than, say, the 911. This predicament is exacerbated in tight parking situations due to the long doors and the Z06's rather pointy exterior trim. Once you're seated, it's pretty easy to settle into a comfortable driving position, though we would have liked to sit just a touch lower. The compromised rear visibility will take some getting used to as well. Chevy added a camera-based rearview mirror display to help out, but the blind spots created by the rear pillars are still significant, especially when backing out of a garage.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Corvette Z06's infotainment system has crisp graphics and quick responses to the touch. The touchscreen's proximity to the driver makes it easy to operate too. As small as the interior is, the 14-speaker Bose audio system manages to produce high-quality sound with plenty of power. Wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is also standard, and both smartphone integration systems worked well during our test.
Many of the latest advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control, aren't available on the Corvette. The rear cross-traffic warning system is a welcome feature given the compromised rear visibility, as are the surround-view cameras that help with low-speed maneuvering. An optional nose-lift system can use GPS to remember steep driveways, which is quite handy.

Storage
8.0/10
How’s the storage? Mid-engine sports cars aren't known for their practicality. But the Corvette makes pretty good use of its available space. The front trunk can hold a couple of grocery bags, and the rear is big enough for two golf bags. Rear storage all but disappears, however, when you store the Corvette coupe's removable roof panel in the trunk.
Similar to other cars in this class, interior storage is limited to a small, shallow center console box and an equally small pair of cupholders. The door pockets are long and lined with felt but can't hold a whole lot.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10
How’s the fuel economy? No doubt fuel economy is not top of mind for a prospective Z06 buyer, but the EPA-estimated 14 mpg in combined driving isn't terrible considering the car's performance. On our real-world mixed-driving test route, we recorded 17.7 mpg. Several full tanks of highway driving had the Z06 returning just over 18 mpg.
Value
8.5/10
Is the Corvette a good value? You can't argue with the value for the money you get with the standard Stingray, and the same goes for the Z06. Its performance rivals the Porsche 911 GT3's yet it costs considerably less. The Z06 is undoubtedly expensive for a Corvette but overall we think it's worth the price. Interior build quality is solid too. Warranty coverage is standard Chevy stuff, which is to say it's unremarkable.
Wildcard
10.0/10
The Z06 makes the most of the mid-engine C8 platform. Its exotic, high-revving naturally aspirated V8 is arguably the best engine Chevrolet has ever produced, and the upgrades to the suspension, tires and aerodynamics allow the Corvette to equal or outpace just about any other car on a track. And in true Corvette fashion, the Z06 doesn't give up a bit of comfort, usability or utility in the process.
Which Corvette does Edmunds recommend?
The Corvette's midlevel 2LT trim (or the Z06's 2LZ trim) is the one to get for the most value. It includes the generous list of features found in the base trim and adds heated and ventilated seats, a front-view parking camera to help prevent damaging the Corvette's nose, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning for a safer driving experience.

U-DRAG RACE: 2023 Corvette Z06 vs. 2020 Shelby GT500! | Quarter Mile, Rolling Start, Handling, More!
[MUSIC PLAYING] CLINT SIMONE: Welcome to Edmunds U-Drags. Turn up the volume, kids, because you're about to hear 16 cylinders--
[CAR REVVING]
--firing away in a red, white, and blue shootout. It's Z06 versus GT500. Ooh, this is going to be fun. What is U-Drags? Come on. It's a race to there and back. At Edmunds, we love to test cars. We came up with this not quite scientific way of doing it, called U-Drags.
We're going to take these two bombers, send them all the way down to the opposite side of the track, where they're going to get hard on the brakes, turn around, and come all the way back. That means we're getting a quarter mile, hard braking, handling, and a rolling start, all in one race. And after the first race, we're going to swap drivers and lanes to make sure everybody gets a fair shot.
We have over 1,400 horsepower right here. This is going to be nuts. And if you want to see us do more crazy stuff just like this, do us a favor and like and subscribe. And if you're looking to your car, head over to edmunds.com/sellmycar.
The Corvette Z06 has evolved beyond a sports car into a bona fide supercar.
[CAR REVVING]
But we want to know if the more powerful, old school Shelby has the goods to take down its much more sophisticated counterpart. [CAR REVVING] But honestly, everyone's a winner today. Because seeing these two fly down the track is going to be epic.
KURT NIEBUHR: Oh, this is a big race, a big one. I have about 100 more horsepower. But this car just doesn't launch that well. Launch control is straight forward in this thing. You set the launch RPM. I'm going to try 1,300, 1,400, something like that. I'm going to heat the rubber up on this thing to really get it to work. If I can get a clean launch, it might be close. But that thing is fast.
REESE COUNTS: I'm excited about this race. We got two of the fastest American cars on the road, both rear drive. Shelby's got the engine up front. I've got mine in the middle. That should help me off the line with the extra weight over the rear, helping me with traction. Also going to help me is this Z06 has a very good traction control system.
Put the car in Track mode, turn Stability Control to Sport. Then, in the Menu, go over to the Performance section. And at the very bottom, it should say Launch Control. And then, all you have to do is press the brake and then press the accelerator, and we are good to go.
KURT NIEBUHR: Come on, man, let's do this.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
WOMAN: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
[BUZZER SOUND]
KURT NIEBUHR: Damn, too much wheelspin, man.
REESE COUNTS: Oh, man, when this thing puts the power down.
KURT NIEBUHR: Ugh, he's just pulling away, I knew it.
Damn. Oh, yeah, can't give that thing an inch. It's just so fast.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
REESE COUNTS: I love the way this Z06 gets around the turn.
KURT NIEBUHR: You can't give that car an inch. Cause if you do, it's going to take a mile.
REESE COUNTS: Not at all. I got a really good start on that one and never let up.
KURT NIEBUHR: I got about as good of a start as you could really expect to get. I think I left at the right time, but just got just enough wheelspin. And that's not getting wheelspin. I could kind of keep up with you all the way to the braking zone. But this is still a heavy car, and you still got to get it to turn.
REESE COUNTS: Well, you ready to swap? I think I want to go in that Shelby.
KURT NIEBUHR: Yes, please. Good luck.
REESE COUNTS: Yeah, you too.
KURT NIEBUHR: [EXCLAMATION] yeah, Corvette Z06. It's the Z07 package, lots of aero, carbon fiber wheels, even though they're painted black. They're still carbon fiber, carbon fiber spoiler, carbon fiber everywhere, which means this thing is a little lighter than that is, even though it's quite short on horsepower. It's still a formidable, formidable weapon. I got to get far enough ahead of that thing because it's going to pull like a freaking train on the way back. So, yeah, wish me luck.
[DING SOUND]
REESE COUNTS: OK, out of the Corvette and into the GT500. I'm going to use the Launch Control, even though it seemed to still struggle off the line. I don't think there's anything else I can do.
RADIO: You're all clear.
REESE COUNTS: Yeah. I'm going to hold the revs and hope for the best. Maybe I can outbrake Kurt. But that Corvette is quick.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
WOMAN: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
[BUZZER SOUND]
KURT NIEBUHR: Take him anyway. Oh.
REESE COUNTS: Man.
KURT NIEBUHR: Come on, man, so good. Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop. Oh, breaks, might be getting really hot. Oh, I blew the [BLEEP] out of that. [BLEEP].
REESE COUNTS: Oh, that corvette.
KURT NIEBUHR: Still got it, man. Even with a bad brake run, this car is a beast, absolute beast.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Here's a lesson. When in doubt, flat out. Wow, I blew that turn. This thing didn't want to stop. It's crazy. But, you know, it's a win anyway. [CHUCKLES]
REESE COUNTS: It didn't really seem to matter that-- that the braking was a little off, because you definitely got turned around quicker than I did.
KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, I went well past where I wanted to. And I braked even a little earlier. But this car requires so much braking pressure, that you kind of think you got into the meat of the brakes, but in reality, you might not have. But this brake-by-wire system in the regular Corvette is pretty good. But here, it still feels a little vague.
REESE COUNTS: I don't love the feel of the brake in there. But [SIGHS] it gets you down. And those carbon ceramics will hold up. But it's just a lot lighter than this Shelby.
KURT NIEBUHR: This car's just so much. It's so much of everything. I love it.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
You know that--
REESE COUNTS: Did I jump it?
KURT NIEBUHR: No. If you did--
REESE COUNTS: It didn't matter.
KURT NIEBUHR: --it didn't matter. And that's why as soon as I started to reel you in, I think I might have said, like, bad start or not, it does not matter.
CLINT SIMONE: Here's how our red, white, and blue shootout went down. In race one, the GT500 was no slouch off the line. But the Z06's mid-engine layout helped it transfer weight quicker to launch much harder. Team Chevy hit 60 in 3 seconds flat and on an unprepped surface, beating the wheelspin-happy Mustang by a crazy 1.2 seconds.
It also ran a 10.7 in the quarter, versus the Mustang's 11.5. The turnaround saw both cars pulling over a G of force. But the Corvette kept its lead the entire time. In the end, the Z06 finished in 31.3 seconds, with the Mustang at 32.1. The Shelby's finishing speed was over 3 miles per hour higher, at 148.5. With a longer straightaway, it might have reeled in the Z06, but not this time.
Race two was a similar story, with one exception. Now, you could argue that the Shelby jumped the start, just barely. But it didn't affect who won. Rather than rerack and get the same result, we pressed on. The Z06 hit 60 in 3.1 seconds, versus the Shelby's 4.0. The Vette ran 10.8 seconds in the quarter, with the Mustang a ways off at 11.6.
Even though the GT500 handily outgripped it in the run, the Corvette maintained its lead in the turnaround and hit the gas hard to get home quick. The Chevy finished the race in 31.5 seconds, with the Shelby a full second behind. But yet again, the Mustang had the higher trap speed, at 147.9. But as we know, you need more than just speed to win at U-Drags. And as you can see, the possible jump start didn't change the result.
And now let's turn to our updated Edmunds U-Drags leaderboard. Remember, our races from last year are not shown because we had to lengthen the course to accommodate big EVs with not-so-big brakes. Each car's quickest run goes on the leaderboard, regardless of race pairing. The Z06 improved on its previous time, but its 31.3-second time remains in the same spot overall. The GT500 sneaks into fourth place with a time of 32.1. Now let's see the in-car camera and the data.
REESE COUNTS: Oh, man, when this thing puts the power down.
KURT NIEBUHR: [MUFFLED SPEECH]
Yeah, I have too much wheelspin, man. Track mode. [INAUDIBLE] just pulling away, I knew it.
Ugh. Can't give that thing an inch. It's just so fast, just so fast.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
CLINT SIMONE: So we don't like to make predictions here at U-Drags because we don't like to be wrong. But is it safe to say that this was somewhat of an expected result?
REESE COUNTS: Yes and no.
KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah.
REESE COUNTS: Honestly, like, I really didn't know. This was lighter, but it's less powerful. So the Shelby struggles off the line, but it really tends to reel cars in at the back end. So I didn't know how it was going to go.
KURT NIEBUHR: It went a little bit against my prediction because this was just farther in front than I expected it to be. I didn't think the Shelby would be quite so hard to get around the corner. But you have to square it up before you give it full throttle, or you're just going to wind up in the weeds.
REESE COUNTS: And really, it's not that hard around the corner. It's just that is a little better.
KURT NIEBUHR: That's-- yeah, we have to keep it in context.
CLINT SIMONE: So you've always told us that these two cars are not really in the same class, not direct competitors.
KURT NIEBUHR: No.
CLINT SIMONE: Why do you say that?
KURT NIEBUHR: This has always been a coupe, sedan, not a sports car. The Corvette has always been a sports car. This is some stupid magazine comparison test that probably came out in the '60s, where they pegged them head to head. But in reality, they're not. Sports car is in a sports car. This is amazing. I mean, it is down on power, but it's lighter. Gearing is shorter. The rear tires are wider. And it's just a little bit more sophisticated when it comes to launching. And you can't give this an inch. You can't, even if you've got that car.
REESE COUNTS: Because that is a really, really fast car. Just, that one's a little faster.
CLINT SIMONE: Yeah. The V8's here surprisingly different too. And they make such a different noise. Which to you sounds better?
[CAR REVVING]
[CAR REVVING]
KURT NIEBUHR: The Shelby.
REESE COUNTS: The Shelby.
CLINT SIMONE: Yeah?
REESE COUNTS: I mean, you got the combination of the big V8 [INAUDIBLE] whine.
KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah. I mean, this still sounds epic, but that is just totally bitching.
REESE COUNTS: Yeah.
CLINT SIMONE: Ooh, OK, just for fun, which one would you rather own?
REESE COUNTS: For track day, I think I might have the Corvette. But I might take the Shelby for the street. I'll get back to you on that.
CLINT SIMONE: [LAUGHS] Did it depend on your race results?
KURT NIEBUHR: No. Not at all.
CLINT SIMONE: Well, sports car, muscle car, supercar, we race everything here at U-Drags. If you want to check out those episodes, you can do so right here on the Edmunds YouTube channel. Thanks for watching.

Compare the Chevrolet Corvette
Chevrolet Corvette vs. BMW M4
The M4 is BMW's high-performance version of the 4 Series coupe and convertible. Unlike the mid-engine Corvette, the M4 has a front-mounted engine, but the base models of both sports cars have similar starting prices and horsepower. Power, performance and engaging driving dynamics are the name of the game for these rivals, but the M4 offers more powertrain options such as a manual transmission and all-wheel drive. When we compared the Corvette and the M4 Competition at the track, the Corvette was quicker to 60 mph and stopped from 60 mph in a shorter distance.
Chevrolet Corvette vs. Porsche 718 Cayman
The 718 Cayman is Porsche's entry-level sport coupe. If you want a convertible, go for the 718 Boxster. The Cayman's light weight and small size help make it very nimble, and it delivers an exciting driving experience. Its steering feel and the way it handles a winding road are almost unmatched. But if you're looking for more power and quicker acceleration, the Corvette is the way to go. It's also more comfortable and offers superior tech. If you're cross-shopping both sports cars, aim for the higher-horsepower Cayman S.
Chevrolet Corvette vs. Ford Mustang
The discontinuation of the Shelby GT500 for the 2023 model year makes the Mach 1 the most powerful and capable Mustang for now. The next-generation Mustang will be released for the 2024 model year. The Mach 1 gets a power increase over the GT model and shares some mechanical components with the GT500. When Edmunds tested it, the Mach 1 stopped from 60 mph in a shorter distance than the Corvette and boasted impressive grip. The Corvette, however, has superior acceleration, offers more comfort and sports a more striking design.
