Car Dealers Anticipate More Memorial Day Momentum, Reports Edmunds.com

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — May 23, 2012 — Memorial Day weekend has been particularly strong for automotive sales in the last two years, and that's a trend that dealers hope will continue this weekend, says Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information. According to Edmunds.com, Memorial Day weekend accounted for 14.7 percent and 13.1 percent of May sales in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Both numbers well exceed the Memorial Day weekend average of 10.8 percent of May sales over the preceding five years (2005-2009).

"Until recently, the hype surrounding Memorial Day sales was met with little more than average sales volume," says Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. "But Memorial Day's performance over the last two years — combined with strong momentum in the new car market this year — has the auto industry feeling especially optimistic going into this holiday weekend."

When car buyers step on dealer lots this weekend, they'll be on the hunt for the best deals possible. Edmunds.com's Deals of the Month page (http://www.edmunds.com/deals-of-month.html) identifies for consumers the best financing, cash and lease deals in May, as selected by Edmunds.com's pricing analysts. Regional incentives and rebates are also listed at http://www.edmunds.com/car-incentives/.

Edmunds.com also advises consumers to focus on specific manufacturers who have stepped up discounts over the last few weeks. According to Edmunds.com's preliminary True Cost of Incentives® (TCISM) data this month, three of the top six major manufacturers — Ford, Toyota and Honda — have boosted incentives since April.
