The annual Edmunds Top Rated Awards recognize the best cars of the year across every major category. But we consider many new cars to be excellent choices, even if they've never won a Top Rated Award. To this end, we maintain a library of articles that identify the best cars for a wide variety of purposes. In all of our content, we ground ourselves in the Edmunds expert vehicle testing program, which leverages our private test track and applies a series of rigorous evaluations to more than 200 new vehicles every year.
Edmunds Top Rated: Behind the Scenes
The Edmunds Top Rated Awards honor the best cars on sale today, from trucks and SUVs to luxury and sports cars. This film takes you behind the scenes with our expert editors as they reveal the winners, the losers and the reasons why.
Among mainstream cars, the Honda Accord continues to impress with its all-around excellence, while the rewarding yet attainable Mercedes-Benz A-Class stands out from the strong field of luxury cars. If you're looking for top-rated coupes or sports cars, the new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8 has vaulted to the head of the pack, giving the redesigned Porsche 911 a run for its money.
Today's top full-size trucks have been locked in an arms race for years, but the Ram 1500 has distinguished itself thanks to an exceptionally compliant ride, among other strengths. There are a number of top-rated midsize trucks, depending on whether you want a carlike ride (Honda Ridgeline), extreme off-road attitude (Jeep Gladiator), or something in between (Toyota Tacoma).
The three-row Kia Telluride has taken the SUV world by storm, offering a remarkable blend of luxury, space and style at an attractive price. Its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Palisade, delivers similar strengths in a more understated package. Top-rated small SUVs include perennial favorites such as the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5. In the luxury class, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is a top-rated midsize SUV, while the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class competes with the Lincoln Navigator for top honors in the full-size segment. If you like the Navigator, keep in mind that the Ford Expedition is a less luxurious version at a more reachable price point.
The Honda Insight has supplanted the Toyota Prius as our top-rated small hybrid, followed closely by the midsize Honda Accord Hybrid. If you're looking for a fancier ride, the Lexus ES 300h is a thoroughly satisfying hybrid luxury sedan. The top-rated electric vehicle remains the Tesla Model 3 due to its consistently excellent performance in our testing. We technically consider the Model 3 a luxury model, though, so if you're looking for a mainstream EV, the related Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric are top-rated picks.
