    I'm wanting to buy a 2004 - 2006 model Mini Cooper S Convertible. Has anyone experienced problems with the mechanics of the convertible top? Do you like / use the sunroof feature? Any leaks? Is there anything I need to watch out for?

    My 2007 S melted down on I75 in Lexington. MINI has dealers in Louisville and Cincinatti. While that isn't 5 minutes away from Lexington, its not 1000 miles, either. You didn't take the car to a MINI dealer after it failed, did you?

    I had a transmission failure at 60,000 mi. on my 2004 automatic basic MINI. I now have a new transmission and about 75,000 miles total on the car. It has been driviing like a dream but if I should have any further transmission problems I'm calling the Salvation Army and donating the car. Fortunately, I was able to get the dealership to pay for the new transmission.

    The transmission on my 2004 Mini (automatic/basic) went out at 60,000 miles! Must be a magic number! Today, I saw a new model Mini parked next to me. Four doors and quite roomy looking. I only drooled over it for 30 seconds and then wondered what will go wrong with it and when it would happen! Never again!

    This is very disheartening. I find it unbelievable that a clutch would go out at 14,500 miles -- and that's what they are telling me. They won't cover any of it.     Same thing happened to me at 22k miles. Here I am at 36k and my clutch is slipping again. Just put my call into the dealership and waiting to see what they say. And yes, i had to pay for the first clutch.

    Our's is a 2008. From delivery, it made a strange noise when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Kind of the noise the front brakes make on a 21 speed bike when you hit them hard. Anyway, the dealer has deglazed the clutch 3 times now and the noise has pretty much disappeared. We're at 6,000 miles now.

    My 2004 MINI Cooper S would blow the doors of cars costing twice as much. There were very few cars that keep up with it on a twisty section of road. As long as there aren't too many long straights a MINI Cooper S will beat cars with two or three times the horsepower.

    I would recommend that you not put any more money into it. It's a money pit --- and BMW will have to learn the hard way (like we all have). Keep detailed log of everything going on and stay with it. We'll make some headway here.

    best to stay away from the 2002, in my opinion, as things were still getting worked out and there were some problems. Also probably the 2003s. I would look at 2004s to 2006s. The supercharged version on the Mini S has won some impressive awards--its a well respected engine in the industry.     Well yeah and a 7 speed automatic. A lot more time in a wind tunnel. More efficient driveline and a lower numeric gear ratio. What is the final drive in a E-clas diesel like 2.94:1? The base (non S) mini cooper used a different 5 speed tranny from a different manufacturer when it first came out; the earlier models had so much trouble (especially with the clutch) that they switched to a five speed Gertrag--I think this happend in 2004.     A little over 27,000 miles on my 2004 Cooper S right now. When I was driving back and forth between CT and VA twice a month I could average over 35 mpg for the whole trip. I only drive my MINI on weekends now since I have a company car but before I got the company car I was getting 25-27 mpg in pure city driving.

    That really stinks that has happened to you but I think thats more of a dealer situation than a warranty situation. Id be more likely to point the finger at the dealer than the vehicle.

    Alan, 750 miles, your not broken in yet. I consistently get 35 to 37 mpg @ average speeds of 70mph while commuting to/from work. Around town 32 to 34mpg is my average unless of course I'm heavy into the gas, then all bets are off.
