Your point (and mine) still stand. At least Hyundai has attempted to make reparations for the error of their ways (however intentional or not). Eyes are now on Ford for the hybrid vehicles not living up to the standards set. Full disclosure: I drive a 2009 Sonata, GLS V6. Rated 19/29. I drive 90% interstate; my mpg average is 31.1 as of lunchtime today. I do limit my speeds to 75 ... Read More
I keep taking my car into the agency and my own mechanic because of ongoing rear brake problems. I get grinding, scraping and squealing. Everyone says it looks fine and then BAM! I needed brakes, rotors and calipers (spelling?) I have taken the car to 2 different agencies and they tell me nothing is wrong. Now after putting on my 2nd set of brakes, my car was towed today because of ... Read More
Still like driving my 2009 Sonata with 40k miles. Have had bad experience with rear brakes, dealer replaced pads at 20k, they fell apart at 39k and Hyundai claims there is no issue. For safety I replaced right rear caliper and pads myself at 39k, thanks Auto zone. Filed interference fit on both calipers so pads move smoothly. Hyundai refuses to reimburse and denies that they have a problem, although the ... Read More
I have found that in the many vehicles we have owned over the years that mileage does in fact improve as more miles are put on them. My 2009 Fusion SEL V6 initially got around the posted estimate of 26mpg Hwy. At about 5000 it started improving to the point that now with out fail it gets 30mpg Hwy with the cruise set at 70mph. It was the same with a ... Read More
I traded my 2006 Honda Civic LX in for my Sonata due to having a newborn back in 2010. The civic was said to get 40 mpg on highway but it never did seem that way. For full disclosure - my car history has been: 1996 Accord: My first car. Cramped for my 6'4" frame, and not particularly peppy (130hp) but it had a personality. Currently have a 2009 Sonata GLS V6: Quiet, smooth riding, lots of power with good MPG (averaging 29-30mpg on my highway commute), absolutely ... Read More

I have been having problems with my 2009 Hyundai Sonata since I bought it. I had the harsh downshift from the beginning and was told it was trying to "remember" my driving habits. I did some research and found there was a technical bulletin that addressed the issue. Update was performed and problem went away for awhile. Solenoids started buzzing so they were replaced. Buzzing was worse so a rebuilt transmission ... Read More
Hi, all. Last yr i signed a lease agreement on a 2011 GLS auto with 0 down, paying ~250/mo including all fees. My buyout price is $12,000 in march 2014. I'm a 2009 Hyundai Sonata driver who experienced the same bad tires and "pull left" affects that others on this site have reported, not to mention chronic low pressure warnings and utterly ineffective efforts on the part of two Huyndai dealers to identify or help resolved these irritating issues that had been occurring since the day I drove my new car off the lot in August 2009. No Luck.. done it a million times.. the radio is just frozen on it.. I think in someway that the XM although is seperate has something to do with the AUX button.. idk.. Any other advice?
eh.. didnt work.. any other suggestions.. no luck.. I appreciate your time!
I would first go to the XMSirius website and send a refresh signal to your radio. Make sure your radio is on when you do it. This should clear the "Loading" issue. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, call customer support and they'll do it.
Sounds more like the stereo head unit to me. It would talk to the XM receiver & most likely drives the USB port as well. Check the fuse. Pull the fuse to fully power-down the stereo, then re-insert it. FYI: The stereo should have a 3 year/36K warranty so if you're within that period take it to a dealer for servicing.
My XM RADIO just says Loading, then goes to the start screen with no info on it. It freezes there and you cant get any response from pressing buttons. ALSO, I do not know if its due to the same issue, BUT, as the XM stopped working so did my HYUNDAI CABLE Aux cord I use to connect my IPHONE that displays the info on the radio. My phone no will ... I live in Canada, and I can see it on the road, the Sonata is selling better than most midsize cars, You would think that if they had these problems that most people would stop driving them, on the contrary they are selling like hotcakes. I have a 2009 Sonata. Starting making a tapping noise about 3 weeks ago. I was on my way to the dealership when the oil and check engine light came on. The engine had to be replaced. I have about 37,162 miles on the car.
It seems to be luck of the draw if you get a Sonata that has a pulling problem. Of course, you wouldn't understand if your car does not have the problem. I had a 2009 Sonata for three years that didn't have any problems. I traded it for a 2012 that constantly wants to turn right. I don't understand why it steers this way and neither does the dealer. You should have no problems maintenance wise on that vehicle. Check and make sure they had the maintenance done regularly. I would suggest taking it to local Hyundai dealer to have inspected by service dept, should charge $75-100 to check. Good luck
I guess it could be the economy of that area. I would have it checked out by a mechanic, it would probably we around $100. That would give the piece of mind your want. The Sonata should be a dependable car, if that is what your referring to as performance. It has 175hp and should get low 30-34 mpg on highway driving.
yes the car has 34000 miles left on the warranty,5year or 60000 miles warranty on hyundai sonata, yes they are selling the car 4000 dollars below the kbb value and 2000 dollars below edmunds value,so am scared if there is any hidden problem with the car,we just test drove on the local road but i had a bad experience previously when buying a used toyota corolla.i live in detroit michigan so am ... When I worked at my local Hyundai dealer as Service Consultant, I ran into this issue on several occassions. The clutch is considered a wear item after the first 12k miles/12 months of ownership. The only way around that is to get the Hyundai District Service Rep. involved. He and only he can approve coverage under warranty not the Service Manager. Hope this helps.
My service advisor stated that it was because of lockups and the system freezing on the Hyundai logo screen. I haven't had that issue except for maybe once not long after I got the car and restarting the car took care of it. - Merg

I suggest getting a seperate set of rims for winter if you get a lot of snow. Where I live they use salt to melt icy roads so alloy rims corrode easily. I bought a set of TOYO winter tires which were excellent last winter, mounted on plain black steel wheels.

Did you get a extra set of special rims for the air pressure so it would be cheaper to change the tires? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!!!!
We are having problems with the clutch loosing pressure and going straight to the floor when pressed. It will come back up and act normal after pumping it a time or two. Do a search on the net and you will see several Hyundai forums that mention this problem. Here is one over on the Edmunds Answers page //answers.edmunds.com/question-Just-bought-2009-Sonata-hard-shift-1st-peri- odically-Clutch-dropped-floor-week-Any-ideas-100034.aspx
I started with the hard down shift issues. Took the car to dealer twice and was told the car is learning my driving habits. I told then I thought I saw a TSB that addressed the issue; they said they have never heard of there being one and all they could do was reset the system. That seemed to do the trick but then I started hearing a humming noise coming ... Read More
Hello, We just purchased a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with 23k miles. Having the same issue going down hill. Took it to dealer they could find nothing wrong so they say. Rpms drop low and then kicks back in making a hard hitting sound.
A family member has the 2009 Malibu LS 4-cyl, it has paddle shifters but they are a joke since the car is pretty much the slowest, most "floaty", and least agile vehicle in the entire class. He complains about the gas mileage being less than he was expecting as well. I wish Chevy would take a note from Ford and start making us some decent vehicles instead of wasting our billions ... Thanks for that information. I've seen some Sonata's that look sort of midnight blue but those could be pre-2009 models or something. Hopefully we can visit a dealer soon that has '10's on the lot. The "grey/blue" is a pretty good way to describe it. I've seen some listings post "Slate Blue" when it is really the "Medium Silver/Blue" but that's usually a non-Hyundai dealer. Gotta go by the picture. As ... Read More
We've got a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, a 2007 Sonata, and are about to buy a 2009 Sonata. I can no longer remember what schedule is due when, and want to keep track of it on the computer. I would like to have an Excel spreadsheet, or use one of these online services. Can anyone recommend an online service (I've seen yourGarageonline.com, etc) or have a spreadsheet they are willing to share? ... Read More
I am new to this forum. Purchased 2009 Sonata Limited 8 months ago. After 2 weeks took it back because of leak in transmission. Verdict was transmission cover was replaced. After 15K miles, car was leaping, and engine light came on. Took it back to dealer. They said Hyundai told them to replace transmission, but sent me on my way. The next day, filled car with gas. Drove 5 miles;car leaped ... Read More

My opinion is that the economy is far worse than what the government and its co-opted (i.e. bailed out) financial analysts/economists are telling the public. Also, the "bounce" in car sales is coming off of the worse year for sales (i.e. 2009) that we had in the U.S. in 42 years, despite the fact that the country is twice the size now than it was then. In 2005, nearly 17.8 million ... Read More
I have a 2009 Hyundai sonata with 25000 miles on it and no one said anything about the pads sticking until i heard the grinding noise and to it to the dealer and they said the brakes were worn out and wanted $240 to replace them.No one said anything about needing to lubercate the calipers. So i think that the dealer should stand by this and repair it under the warrentee. ... Read More

I find the Sonata to be more... i'm going to use the word feminine... curvy, modern. I've liked them in pictures and seeing them on the road. They definitely catch my eye. The Optima (in images) looks a bit more masculine to me. Not quite hard edges but less swoopy. More aggressive. More like an old mustang as opposed to a corvette. (maybe that's a bad analogy) Specifically from a profile ... Read More
"In trying to decide between a Mazda 6, Toyota Camry or Hyundai Sonata (2011), I've heard from at least 4 dealer personnel, two at other brand dealerships (which I dismissed as they are biased), but two at one particular Hyundai dealership (including a salesman and a technician I spoke with), that they have personally seen Hyundai give extreme difficulty to customers over what should have been coverage by Hyundai for warranty ...
