1st, vibration 12-1300 rpm to approximately 1800 rpm not in gear. My 2004 4.6 had the same problem. I now own a 2006 with a 5.4, still same problem. The engine blows away the ford 5.4 plus I'm getting close to 17 mpg mountain roads and 19mpg on the interstate. I would change the transmission fluid asap. Check and see if their are metal shavings in the pan and filter. This would tell if the bands and clutches are bad. Also if their is shavings in the fluid this is going to compound the damage to the transmission . Some times just changing old and burnt transmission oil will cure a lot of problems. Dealer recommended a fuel injection purge (Wynn's) in addition to oil change etc. Cost: Additional $110.00.. Dealer said Ford recommended it. If you are talking New, you have to decide first, how much you want to spend, and second what do you want to do with the truck. Some basic advice, go for the 5.4L V8. The dealer in a town about 1 hour from me has 2006 Extended Cab 4x4 pickups for 21,740.00 These have never been driven or sold. Is this really how bad the times have gotten for Ford? Gary, Just had my 2002, F150 with 60000 miles lose the "Sun Gear" (weld broke) this in turn destroyed the clutches, Torque converter, and Overdrive.
