LOS ANGELES — The 2014 Chrysler 300S puts a premium on the color black, with such touches as an optional Gloss Black painted roof and a new Black Chrome grille surround.

The 300S will debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show and go on sale in the early spring.

Pricing will be announced closer to launch, Chrysler said. The base 2013 Chrysler 300S starts at $34,640, including a $995 destination charge.

The Chrysler 300S is a midlevel model that slots in below the Chrysler 300C and SRT models. It competes with the BMW 5 Series, Hyundai Genesis and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Chrysler said the 2014 300S gets "an even more 'blacked out' look" for the new model year. Details include new Gloss Black belt molding, daylight opening surrounds and taillamp bezels, along with Gloss Black headlight bezels. The intention is to give the car a "toughened" look, according to the automaker.

It also gets a new Ambassador Blue Nappa leather sport interior. A new exterior color is Dark Ceramic Gray.

The Chrysler 300S is equipped with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with a cold-air induction system and a sport-tuned exhaust system. The engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Rounding out the package are new 20-inch wheels with a Hyper Black finish. It is available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Edmunds says: The 300S rolls tough into the L.A. auto show.
