GENEVA — The European version of the Ford EcoSport debuted at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show, as the Detroit automaker continues its overseas SUV offensive.

Ford has not announced plans to bring the EcoSport to the U.S. It is set to go on sale in Europe in late 2013.

Ford said it is aiming to sell 1 million SUVs in Europe alone over the next six years. The 2015 Ford Edge is also set for a European debut.

The European EcoSport will get a range of powertrains, including Ford's 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost gas engine and a 1.5-liter diesel engine.

The EcoSport is a critical part of Ford's global plans. It was introduced to South America in 2003 and pitched as the first affordable SUV in the region. The EcoSport is being rolled out in India and China as well. It is built on Ford's global B-segment platform, which is the basis for the Ford Fiesta in the U.S. and Europe.

Edmunds says: Ford's small SUV is helping to drive the automaker's success beyond its home market.
