DETROIT — A new Kia 2+2 sports car concept will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, as the Korean brand continues its march away from a bargain-basement image.

The unnamed concept was created at Kia's U.S. design studio in Irvine, California. A single teaser image of the car taken from overhead shows curvaceous proportions. No technical specifications have been provided at this point.

The "car is intended to turn heads while delivering superb driving enjoyment on both road and track," Kia said in a statement.

This is not the first time that Kia has dabbled with a sports car concept. The Kia GT Concept, a 390-horsepower rear-wheel-drive sedan with suicide doors, was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The GT Concept was one of the first hints of Kia's ambitions to enter this segment, with Kia's chief designer declaring, "It's exactly the kind of car Kia should be making."

Edmunds says: We echo that sentiment. Kia may be ready at last to launch an authentic sports car.

  • I look forward to seeing what the Kia 2+2 Sports Car Concept looks like. Kia has been on a roll of late with compelling products and increasingly sophisticated design. I never really warmed up to the latest Genesis Coupe. Originally, I thought the Genesis Coupe would be a tasteful near-luxury sports coupe at an affordable price, undercutting cars like the Infiniti G37. Instead, the styling became bizarre and polarizing with ongoing mixed reviews for the manual transmission. I hope that the Kia can hit both the objective and subjective key points.
