What is the A6?
Sitting dead center in the middle of the German automaker's lineup, the Audi A6 is a midsize luxury sedan with sharp styling, solid performance and one of the most comfortable and premium interiors you'll find at this price point. The A6 has been on sale since 2019, but it's still one of the strongest and most competitive luxury sedans on the market. In addition to its solid styling, comfort and driving dynamics, the A6 is available with solid in-car tech and a wide array of driver aids. Audi has announced that updates are coming for the 2024 A6, including revised exterior styling with new bumpers, grille and wheels and more standard features and in-car tech. The A6 is only a few years old, so this should help it remain competitive in the face of new competition.
The A6 is offered in a wide array of variants, including the lifted A6 Allroad wagon and the sporty S6 with a strong turbocharged V6 engine. Our favorite version remains the Audi RS 6 Avant, a high-performance station wagon with mean looks and an even meaner engine. All of those cars are different enough from the standard A6 that we review them separately, but all share the same overall feel and character, a good thing in Audi's case.
But the A6 is far from alone in its class. Other midsize luxury sedans include the aging BMW 5 Series and recently redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Genesis G80 and Volvo S90 both offer slightly more space at a slightly lower price tag than the Audi, but neither can match the A6's luxury feel in terms of interior quality, tech and comfort. There are also more stylish alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW 8 Series, though if either of those appeal, we suggest checking out the swoopy and practical Audi A7 hatchback. It's basically an A6 with a sleek roofline and extra storage.
