A few months in - a lot to be desired

South Florida Volvo Convert, 04/06/2022
2022 Volvo S90 B6 Inscription 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
This updated review comes after 6 months of use. Let's be frank: The various tech bugs are just unbearable. Apple CarPlay did come via an OTA update but it is HORRIBLE on this screen. When you are using a map and in the view that has other apps visible (i.e., music controls and other widgets), the map becomes about the size of the original iPhone and is in Landscape orientation. … Unsurprisingly it is not connected to the dashboard map, nor is it connected to the HUD... so it's really useless given how small it is on the screen. If you want to leave it in full screen mode, it isn't bad, but... the steering wheel controls don't seem to control music aside from the volume. The general feel is that the car was not designed to work with CarPlay and whatever genius signed off on this was probably hoping that it isn't used. There is so much more but I'll leave it there... Based on this alone, I will not buy another Volvo. Pivoting away from Apple CarPlay... The proximity sensors are WAY too sensitive when it comes to slamming on the brakes (while in reverse) and toggling the cameras on/off. The way the brakes engage will make you think you hit the thing you still had clearance with, and the cameras taking over the screen have a lot of lag and are glitchy. Very glitchy. The speed limit (signs) displayed in the car are frequently WRONG and at times one wrong sign will overlap the correct one (i.e., the dashboard will display TWO different signs at the same time). While pretty much everything about the tech is horrendous, the driving dynamics remain outstanding. The car feels very "confident" on both dry and wet surfaces. It handles bumpy (paved) roads quite well despite the low profile tires. It's not as quick as it should be, but it's an enjoyable drive. The seats are everything the hype promises.... so comfortable, supportive, adjustable, etc. This includes the rear seats as well; our kids only want to ride in this car now! The materials are all holding up well even with kids in and out all of the time. The interior is super quiet (little wind or road noise... no creaks/rattles). That's great because the the Harman Kardon stereo is outstanding. We have experienced zero mechanical issues and the paint is still pristine. The gas milage is as advertised. The technology should be gutted from the car (along with any/all Volvo senior leaders that support it) because the car is so much better than the tech you have to interface with... ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This review comes after about 6 weeks of use. I am really impressed with the car overall. It has tons of great features and makes excellent use of it's considerable length (I also have a corporate lease on a Chevy Impala, which is about 1 inch longer, and the Volvo's interior feels far roomier). I love the looks (though I wish they left the dual exhaust visible). Enough has been written on the tech's design flaws but I found them not quite as bad as many have written. I do think the difference is mostly down to driving it for a short stint (to write about it) vs driving it all the time. A new tech flaw for MY 2022 is that the new Google system seems to be 100% reliant on cell coverage for its computing powers (vs some onboard processing). For reasons unknown, the cell service has been sketchy at times in South Florida. You should also know that the Google Play Store available in the car is NO WHERE NEAR the same as the one you can access on mobile devices. There is no Pandora, Waze, or may other apps you might expect. Taking out Apple Car Play/Android Auto is a HUGE step back (the kind that should cost whoever approved it their job). The driving dynamics are very much consistent with other cars in the class that I have driven. It doesn't feel quite as quick, but it has more than enough pep to get you into any merge lane you need. Highway speeds are really quite in the car and it is a very smooth ride (even on 35 profile tires) I love one of the two gage clusters (the one with the maps) but the other is underwhelming. The one I prefer has very easily read information and the screen is flawless under all lighting conditions. The HUD works well and is not cluttered (you cannot wear polarized sun glasses with HUDs in general). The trip computer is marginal at best, however. I cannot find a readout of what each tire's pressure is (you only seem to get a light that a tire is low and then you have to hunt for the offending tire). I'd love to give this car 5 stars, but it just needs a bit more pep and Apple Car Play is a 100% must have. Google's automotive platform is not the same caliber (not talking about Android Auto, but rather this car's Google OS). One final note: We passed on Audi because South Florida dealers wanted above MSRP (like so many); our local Volvo dealer was not doing that.
