This was one of the best cars I'd ever bought, until the ENGINE SEIZED UP flying down the interstate @ 80+. It seems the dealership FORGOT to put the drain plug back in after an oil change. After THREE WEEKS in a rental GEO Metro, the dealership returns the jetta to me with a "new" engine that BLEW UP less than a month later. Mind you, the car had just under 19,000 miles! I took the car to another VW dealer (you have to so the warranty pays) and they replaced the engine AGAIN! At 23,368 miles, this "new" one DIED. Dead. No note, no clues, just graveyard dead. When the dealership picked up the car, I gave them the keys, too.

This is by far the worst car I ever owned. Since I got it, every month I have to take to the mechanic. Too much money invested for nothing. I just trade it in for a Toyota RAV4 which I love. I wouldn't felt comfortable selling it to someone else, even thought many people wanted to buy it. Beware of the Jetta 1.8T.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here; but, I just love this car. It's a hoot to drive, safe as can be and has great asthetic lines. The VR6 is one peppy little engine with plenty of torque. It's mated to a 5speed manual in my case. Some times wish I had the automatic while stuck in the DC beltway traffic. There are also lot's of nice little things you can do to personalize the car. I.e. It's big in the tuner world.

This car is cute and the body feels "durable." However, the engine was purposefully designed to ONLY be repaired by VW dealership, as most smaller repair shops never have the specific parts in stock, and always find it difficult to get the parts from VW. The "check engine" light continuously lighted up (usually for no reason, causing me unnecessary trips to VW). The "mass air flow sensor" failed at least 8 times. The radiator had to be replaced ($680). The water pump and related fans had to be replaced ($800+). Spark plugs "misfired" and had to be replaced ($950). Engine hoses and pipes burst because they melted ($450). I could go on and on.

Car is incredibly comfortable, & feels solid. My first'nice' car,I bought it used & put 20k miles annually on it commuting to work. The biggest drawback(only drawback) is NO ONE with any experience works on TurboDiesels in the WV area...& turbodiesels(be they VW or otherwise) are very special little beasts,&require attention. My routine timing belt change was a fiasco (along with virtually every TDI owner who has is done),& the Ntake is constantly clogging with diesel soot(there's a way to stop it, but it's not too envirofriendly). It's an incredibly nice car,&gets great mileage (45mpg pre- timing belt change),&it is much snappier than the 90HP rating shows.

This was the biggest mistake of my life. If it wasn't won thing it was another. I will NEVER buy another VW again and I tell everyone I see that they should stay away from all VW's. They have the worse customer service in the industry. I am trying to unload this piece of " " but, I can't seem to find any offers. I hope someone reads this and changes ther mind or maybe someone at VW will wakeup and smell the coffee.

I bought my 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T Wolfsberg edition used in 2003. I've had it for a year now and I love it. I've had a couple 'recall' parts that I've had to bring the car in for, but they were minor and I was not having any problems. My car is roomy, cute, and fun to drive! I love all of the little extras the manufactures put into making this vehicle. It has been a reliable, fantastic purchase. I would definitely buy this car again.

I love the car. Upset that the 2001 has only 155 hp and the 2002 has 185, but these things can be fixed. Easy to work with and one of the best manual cars I have driven. I put about 20,000 miles on my car a year for work and I have never been uncomfortable for a second. Nothing like the feeling of driving in 6 inches of snow and not having to worry about the ABS or traction control not working. I was passing most of the all wheel drive vehicles.

Purchased it used with 18,000 miles on it it has been an absolute blast to drive ever since. Came with all the options and sport suspension (17" wheels) it handles on rails and quick off the go. It has been in the shop a few times and in the twin cities that means 3 weeks to book an appointment. Check engine lights comes on, goes off, comes on. Had to replace the o2 sensor under warranty, at 40,000 miles the mass flow intake went out, that was $300 plus to fix. Real fun to drive, it's a car, stuff is going to go wrong with it. I would recommend it to a friend, good bang for the buck.

The TDI is an impressive car, it has more than adequate pickup for around town, and cruises effortlessly on the highway. What other car can you spin the tires in and at the same time get 53 miles per gallon on long trips. The build quality is very high, and VW has one of the best interiors ever made in this car.

Bought our 01 Jetta new. Just traded in and lost our butts. They hold their value terribly. Why? Maintenance is very expensive and frequent. We spent about $1,500 over the last year alone, including a ignition "switch" in January 05 that ran us $580. Any repair is $300+ easy, no matter what it is. Keep in mind this car is less than 4 years old with 61K. while they may look cool, especially the interior, my advice is to steer clear. Hope this helps someone out looking but not sure.

Bought the Jetta Wagon because we had just bought a Golf TDI and were impressed with the great interior and driving experience. Whoops! In two years we've had $6000 in maintenance. 22c/mile, more than twice any other car I have owned. And that's with just 100k on the clock. I've taken numerous Hondas and Subarus past 150k, and NONE of them has ever cost me more than 8-10cents/mi to maintain. Multiple cooling leaks, water pump (plastic impeller) failure (twice). Failed MAF sensor. Electrical, window and door latch problems. Last week a new ECU ($1000). It's not just the number of things, it's the parts cost (which Consumer Reports doesn't report). Example: cup holder broke. The PART was $180!

Like other reviewers, I had a window clip break so that I could not roll up my window. The local VW dealer, from whom I did not buy the car, replaced it immediately as well as the other window which had not broken, they were extremely helpful. I also had the car not start one time shortly after purchasing, but it turned out to be a problem with the key fob, also fixed free of charge. I have read all the bad reviews, but I have been extremely happy with this car. I have driven it tons and I love it. I did also find however that you need to keep an eye on the oil, it does need about a quart every 1k.

The best all-around compact sedan for $20,000: Faster than most small cars, good fuel economy for such a powerful car, handles good but doesn't ride harsh, very good interior quality and ergonomics (besides the cupholders), and a long list of standard features. Of course nothing's perfect: Quiet cabin helps rattles from the dashboard and doors sound more prevalent(door rattles can be dispatched by wrapping electrical tape around the "U" shaped door latch). Service departments are lousy. This has been verified by numerous owners around the country.

Where do I begin...Lets start with the peeling paint on the hood and roof. Not exactly showroom quality and its only two years old. I have replaced the rear brakes and calipers two times in the past 36K miles. My Maxima is going on 40K miles on the original brakes! Tail lights seem to burn out bulbs regularly to the point where I actually have a supply in the trunk and the brakes sound like a fog horn when backing up. According to two dealerships..."this is just how it is!" The pads are dragging against the rotors and there is no way to prevent it....right! What else..oh yeah..the chronic ignition coil failure and that horrible turbo lag.

I had 3 major complaints. 1st, from day one the car had many unidentified interior squeaks and rattles that the dealer couldn't/wouldn't fix. 2nd, the 150 hp 1.8t is not a very powerful motor, but it was always enough to make the front wheels break free, causing a nasty, jarring hop under hard acceleration. 3rd, the damn check engine light was on for the last 10000 miles I owned the car. The dealer was always good about fixing whatever was wrong for free, but the light never stayed off for more than a week. In spite of all that, it was a lot of fun, and it always got me where I needed to go.

I bought a new 2001 Jetta GLS 2.0L (4sp auto) back in OCT 2000. I have 85,000 miles on it now and still runs like a new. I don't think I had many problems with this car. But once, there was a window problem which VW dealer recalled and fixed and another one was the automatic shift knob didn't work because when you try to change gears you're supposed to step on the brake for safety, but that sensor broke. I think replacing that cost me around $150~200.. and some light came on but VW dealer took care of.. And that's about it... bad thing about this car is that rear space is too small. No rear leg room. Gas mileage is poor. 2.0L has only 115hp and only get 22/28 miles per gallon.. weak engine

When gas went up to $1.75 a gallon in July '01, I purchased the Jetta GLS TDI. I got great gas milage right off the lot. I averaged in the first two years 32,000 miles. After five and a half years, I have over 129,000 miles. Over the lifespan I have averaged 49 - 52 mpg. If the maintenance is kept up and it is driven as any diesel should, long trips, you shouldn't have too many issues.

This car is fun to drive and all, but I don't know how much fun it can be if you see your bank balance going down so fast every time you go for a repair and you have to go for a repair just like you go for a hair cut. It may be its just happening to me, I don't know, but its very frustrating. I've also owned a Japanese made car and it ran fine even until 100,000+ miles, without any issues until I sold it. The car is comfortable for long trips, luxurious, very fast and stuff....but all the money we have to spend on repairs just undermines the positivity. This is not a reliable car.

I have 95,000 miles on my 2001 Jetta TDI. I bought it with 13,000 miles on it about 3 years ago because I wanted a comfortable car with great mileage as I am in the auto wholesaling business. The TDI delivers on these primary points. Handling and performance are great, the TDI while short on HP delivers great torque and acceleration for most situations. I am averaging 42 mpg consistently with the automatic transmission in combined (mostly highway) driving. I buy and sell up to 50 used vehicles a month, mostly late model and of all the Jetta models the TDI is tops for resale in this regard.

I LOVE my Jetta. After owning 2 sables in a row and a Sebring, I got my 1st German engineered car . . . . I will NEVER go back! I have a 6 year old son and he can fit himself and 2 friends in the backseat, PLENTY of trunk room for the sports stuff, but I still feel like I am driving a sports car. I feel so safe in it - it is so sturdy. The transmission seems to shift hard, had it checked, they said no problem - so I guess I have just gotten used to it - but otherwise I am in love! It is a bold red with black windows, sunroof, black leather interior - awesome!

I've loved my Jetta GLS TDI ever since I bought it. It's such a sharp looker and you really can't beat the fuel efficiency (45+mpg). However, I have had a few of the minor problems mentioned here already (the windows, peeling interior surfaces, finicky CD player). That said, I still love the interior - it's so clean and well designed - and the blue hue of the lights at night are so cool. The Jetta is certainly feature rich - but, I have certainly had problems with some of them. This car certainly could use some improvements in the electrical and interior department. Also, for those with the auto tranny, the shift lock mech. can be a pain - watch out for a faulty brake light switch.

I was in love with VW's, so I bought it. I've had to replace a lot of things, and the check engine light is still on, but it runs and gets me where I need to go. Talk about the soul of a VW! It dies almost every day when I get home from work, but never at a stop sign or light or anything like that, just when its home. Its really fun, but too expensive and has too many little things go wrong with it. Advice to first time buyers : get the timing belt done right away. Don't wait til' it breaks. If there's a check engine light on, don't expect it to be nothing. Get it checked out! These cars are the best around if you have the money and time to maintain them all the time. I'd suggest a Honda!

I've had this car for going on three years and only a few minor problms. The air flow sensor was bad when I bought the car (recalled but I was over the milage - $80) and the brake light switch wasn't working correctly ($15). Other than that I haven't put any money into the car except regular upkeep. Oil changes (using synthetic) don't have to be done but every 10,000 miles which will save a few bucks. The only improvement that could be made is with the auto transmission. The auto doesn't make good use of the torque the car has and RPM's go too high before shifting for a diesel engine. If you're looking to buy get one with the 5-speed manual transmission.

I have had the car during 2 St. Louis winters. Both times the fuel has frozen. The first year I didn't use any diesel additive. The 2nd yr I used plenty, but it still failed. The dealer told me that it was bad fuel, luckily I bought the fuel from Quik Trip and the guarantee there fuel. They paid for it. So I am still unsure about the condensate theory. Now (60000) it needs a timing belt, new rear brakes, and it looses power at 2400 RPM's. I inquired at the dealer the cost Timing Belt=500.00, Power problem =300.00 to 1200.00. I am disappointed at the high cost to maintain this $21,000 vehicle. I love the performance, driving, and styling of the Jetta.

I always had schedualed matenance done on this vehicle, but once one thing happend it was a domino effect. From O2 sensors to the transmission sliping, needing a new fuel pump and injector, this car has been a nightmare. The check engine light remains on, even after the work I did to it. The traction control and EPC lights won't disapear either. I only get 16 mpg. I might as well drive an SUV. I talk to people all of the time with this vehicle and they have similar problems.

I've always wanted a jetta so of course my I had to get a jetta. The first year was great. By the time the second year came the problems just would not stop. There's this gross stuff coming from the door that hardens. There's obviously something wrong with my transmission and it chuckles backwards at times. Dealership insists there's nothing wrong with it everytime. Each snowstorm the guy has issues with traction even after changing to brand new tires. The velour seats are horrible with everything sticking to it. I can't wait till I get rid of this car.

I have had nothing but problems with my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS Wagon and VW dealership's and care for my car. Every month there is some new problem. I definitely would not recomend this car, or company to anyone. I have never seen such poor preformance and quality, from the vechicle to the people who sell and work on them.

a.m. radio went out at about 45k $600 dealer quote to replace. the transmission literally fell out before 25k. the passanger side mirror defrost has never worked though i have had it replaced a couple of times. the sunroof drain clogs periodically and starts dripping into the car via the interior lights. a can open is required for anyone over 5' to get in and out of the back seat. interior coating peels constantly. armrest storage latch snaps off randomly (4 times) the front bumper catches or snags on parking curbs and rips. diesal fuel has remained much higher than premium unleaded defeating the noise for mileage trade. v.w. floor mats replaced a number of times only to fall apart quickly.

When I bought this car, I wasn't really enthusiastic about it. I had been trying for a MINI, and kinda got stuck with this (the dealers were shady). However, to my enjoyment, I have gotten quite comfortable with it since then. Adding rims and a few aftermarket things made this car very classy, and I enjoyed the ride. I did get a finicky blinker, though, and the starter made a funny noise, although it was mechanically sound. But at 132k miles, I am pleased to find that I haven't had to do much to the car at all. I replaced the vacuum tubing and secondary air pump for about $700, but mechanics were fair: $45 for extensive diagnostics. Looking to do a few more things for a truly killer ride.

This car is remarkable quick for being a 4 banger. I was equally impressed by the list of standard features with this model. Being a single man, I did not care about backseat room, until I had to sit back there! There was less room than my 2dr Accord Coupe! But the car really proved itself to me when I rear ended a brand new Mercedes, the airbags weren't pleasant (but what ones are?) however I was highly impressed by the way it held up. The damage was $10,000+ and would have surely totaled my Honda had I been driving it. After the car was fixed it wasn't the same (are they ever?) so I traded up to a 2002 VW Passat (will review that one too)

I purchased my Jetta GLS new in '01. I loved the car for the first three years (while it was still covered under its factory warranty). Since then I've had a turbo hose blow, brake switch go three times, replaced two timing belts, and had to replace several emissions sensors. I love the car, but HATE the repair cost. I can't go in for a repair for less than $250 (average $550). So unless you drive a TON the gas savings doesn't make up for the repair cost. Also, mechanics are few, even at the dealers, so you may have to wait for Bob to come back from vacation to get your car back. The timing belt is a $cow$, it wears out quick and then the car needs several adjustments to get it running right again. Overall this is a good car, I just wish I had gotten the extended waranty. I am looking to replace my car soon due to the high cost of repairs.

Annoying rattle from the door locks. 4. Burns about a quart of oil per 1k miles ect...All kinds og small mechanical problems, just enough to annoy the heck out of you...

This one is a lease we will buy when over. This has been a great car with only one exception. The break light switch goes bad very quickly and the dealership did want to cover the 3rd one. One quick call to VW customer service and they made the dealer cover the switch. This car handles great and has tons of features that you would have to spend thousands more to get on a BMW, etc.

Just to let buyers know there are several issues to be aware of before purchasing a new or used 2000-2001 VW Jetta. They are very prone to issues. First off, I bought my car new in Aug 2000, it is a 2001 VW Jetta. In less than 2 years have had an Oxygen Sensor recall, both Driver and Passanger Window regulators have broke, resulting in the windows falling inside the doors, the electrical wiring has had to be rewired, the Brake Switch broke and needed replacing, and the interior plastic is already peeling. I have owned VW's in the past and am just beside myself at the poor quality of this car!!

This is a great car. I owned a Jetta about 10 years ago and fell in love with it all over again. The handling is an absolute dream. And it's sure footedness in the snow is remarkable. Gas mileage is very good.
