Since bought as demo with 4k, front roters have been replaced, cupholder non-functional, power roof adjusted, then would not close completely, and the transmission is absolutely horrible, in that it upshifts too quickly when starting from a stop, then downshifts abruptly just to keep up a moderate acceleration. During this, the RPM jumps back and forth from 1500 to over 3k. Dealer has told me twice that the tranny is normal, but in over 500,000 miles and a lot of vehicles, I have never driven such a strange transmission. Next is to the VW rep, I guess, or lemon suit.

I bought my Jetta GLS TDI new in 2001 and it now has 197,000 miles and is going strong. I commute 150 miles round trip daily, so I wanted a comfortable car with good fuel mileage - I have been well pleased. I'm considering buying another one, but want to hang on to this one. My only problems have been with VW service. I used to take it to the dealer since it's difficult to find a non-VW dealer mechanic, but have regretted the inconvenience and the cost. When I contacted VW last summer after a dealer in SC had my car for 3 weeks and continued to give me the run-around, VW was not helpful and borderline rude. So, I'll keep my TDI and maybe buy another one, but find an independent mechanic.

My Volkswagen Jetta Wagon is the best. I am a musician and haul lots of instruments and gear. I loaded all this up in several wagons for a test drive and there was no question. This car held more equipment, drives much better (it's a blast to drive), is more comfortable for long drives, and the sound system is outstanding. The heated seats and sunroof add to the joy. I could not be happier with this car. I've got 115,000 miles and never had a problem. I have only had to make oil changes and 3 tune-ups. Fahrvergnuegen! Danke Volkswagen!

Considering trading for new GTI was going to look at those reviews and thought I'd check the Jetta reviews first. Wow. Surprised by all the problems. Have the base GL with 5sp. Added alloys wheels and CD player. So far, knock on wood, no problems. Electrical, engine, windows, etc. all fine for last 2 yrs. Car has been just as reliable my last Acura. Been to the dealer only for 2 oil changes and to install CD player. Hope the GTI reviews are better or I may stick with what I have. Cool message board.

Sad to say I totalled my wagon last week. This was a very functional and reliable car for me. I haul lots of stuff to work every day, so it was great for the space factor although removing head rests to lay seats flat was a bit cumbersome. I received the car at 70,000 from and rode it to like 117 in 2.5 years. In that time I changed the impeller (seems common) on the coolant system and the front bumper shield thing rides a bit low to the ground so it was dragging and held up by duct tape in its last few months. The brakes were great, and I didn't mind the cup holders either way. This car saved my life in my accident where I hit the cement wall on the freeway, so I'm 4eva grateful.

Great Car with some squeaks and rattles

I have put over 60,000 miles on my Jetta and I still love it. It has been a great car. My main issue was with the build quailty. It seems like there were a lot of small issues originally and I have had squeaks and rattles the entire time, and they come and go through the years. My window went out, but that was a recall, and my rear brakes did need to be replaced at about 30k, so I guess i did notice what the majority of people did, but i have not had O2 sensor or ignition coil problems ( although the ignition coils were a recall too) I love it, its a great car to drive. I would buy another one, although I think i would fight for an extended warranty.

29k mi. Have replaced the transmission, AC..twice, window clips..twice (window dropped into door), climatronic ac thermostat, CD player, radio, cup holder, center console/leather arm rest..(handle broke), battery...(they used unsealed batteries before 2002 which leak in hot weather like here in Houston), and have reprogrammed transmission points...8 times (red lines and shakes car). There is 2 second delay when shifting from R to D. The brakes wear out at 15-20k mi and have no sound indicator so that you ruin the routers w/out even knowing it. This wolf in sheep’s clothing will take every dollar you have in repairs.

I absolutely love my TDI. It took a while to find one with a 5 speed, but it was worth the hunting. I can't believe this kind of pick-up from a standstill on a diesel. And naturally, unless you're in the market for a hybrid, you can't beat the mileage. Plus, even though the car is (comparatively) low-priced as far as German sedans go, it seems to be an eye- catcher, not to mention that there almost seems to be a TDI clique/club/cult? Comfortable and stylish interior for two adults (don't plan any road trips for four 6-footers) Only real complaint is: why doesn't VW give up on the dial knob for seatback adjustment that they've been using ever since the (original) Beetle?

I owned a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, my friend owned one and my parents, and wife had a VW Beetle. All were fantastic to drive, super peppy. However, in the five years I owned it, the check engine light was off for only five months. Something was always wrong. Only the coil recall made it not driveable, but all of the issues were annoying. Its brakes needed replacement after 15,000 miles. Its arm rest broke two times once by a valet and once by friend (one screw is a dumb design). This car has a high clearence compared to Hondas. My wife's '02 Beetle 1.8T also had all same engine problems and more. The Jetta is expensive to fix. I spent $900 fixing it once only to have check engine come back on three weeks later. All that and on lease turn in they still charge you $250 for check engine light that is never off.

I Have found my 2001 Jetta GLS TDI to be an absolute joy to drive. Granted, I treat it with care and get the recommended service as suggested in the manual. It has never failed me not even in cold midwestern winters. The 49-50 miles per gallon was a strong reason for choosing the TDI. I had previously heard of the old dreaded "deisel dogs", but the turbo 1.9L diesel engine delivers a peppy and sufficient acceleration. I'm constantly receiving compliments on its appearance and ride. It's without a doubt, the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning! Give it a try.

Certainly not my most reliable car, but it just has a lot of personality and it's certainly been my favorite. MK IV VWs are famous for a handful of issues and mine's had a few of them, all luckily covered under my CPO warranty since I bought it from a VW dealer. It was really love at first sight, a VR6 manual in silver with grey interior. The dealer let me take it out by myself and I was sold. I still love to drive it 4 years later and it still looks like new, aside from a couple of minor things. The issues? The infamous coilpack, MAF sensor, throttle body, and minor mechanical things like the latch on the armrest. VW recalled quite a few things before they ever failed on me.

Check Engine Light: bane of my existence

I've had so many issues! It's like they've gone out of their way to make repairs and maintenance as difficult and expensive as possible. The engine leaks oil, a known VW issue. The worst part is the check engine light. In the 3.5 years I've owned this car, the CE light has been OFF for a total of 2 months. I have taken it to 5 different mechanics, each one plugs it in to the diagnostics computer and either gets NO codes or codes that make no sense. All they can do is turn it off, but it just comes back on. No one can fix it, no one can even find a cause, but the car can't pass an emissions test, and so now I can't legally drive it. $12K wasted!

The Jetta wagon looks great, is fun to drive, and can haul a lot of stuff...but it is not reliable. It has spent 30 days in the shop in one year. The problems have been sensor malfunctions, failed switches (casuing the car to be unable to switch out of park), and transmission problems (causing 4th gear to fail and the other gears to malfunction). VW dealer and customer service has been terrible. I have serviced the vehicle at TransOcean VW in Pasadena. I would not reccomend them. In additional to the mechanical problems, they dented the car.

I have 103,000 miles on my 2001 VW Jetta TDI since I bought it new. I've followed all the maintenance recommendations, and only use Delvac 1 oil in it, which I change myself every 10,000 miles. Lifetime fuel economy is 46.8 mpg, and I drive it pretty hard. I've owned a lot of cars in my life, and this is the most reliable car I've had yet. As long as you buy the diesel fuel where the big rigs buy theirs, you will be OK in the winter.

This is a great car in general, but I would strongly advised you of some major problems. Take the leather interior, the black material seats will leave you spending hours a week tring to remove the dust that will accumulate on it, and it is extremely hard to remove. Also pay the extra for the 1.8 liter or TDI or even better VR6 cause the regular model is slow, slow slow!!! You will be disapointed it has no power. If I would have to do it all over I would much rather spend that money or less on other models, like acura or nissan ... But the comfort, the cheap fuel and the style still makes it worht buying!

I bought this car new in 2001. I bought it because it looked great and was a lot of fun to drive. It did not take any time, however, for the interior to develop a symphony of rattles, squeaks, and creaks. This became indicative of the overall quality of the car. Many of the interior surfaces have a thin rubber material applied to hard plastic - it looks and feels great until it starts pealing off. The paint seems very thin to me, as well. I take good care of my cars and this one has a lot of scratches and dings. Mechanical problems seem to arise every time it goes into the shop.

I don't recommend anyone to buy this car.The first week I had the car, my window fell!!! I've been back for that same problem 4 more times since. I've also had a brake sensor malfunction, so I couldn't get my car off of park and had to get it towed to the dealership. I've had to replace the airconditioning module and fan and now have to replace the control module for the car. The inside is also peeling, the armrest broke and the seats collect fuzz like crazy. It's not worth it!! Save yourself the trouble. A 2001 model is still rather new to be having all these freaken problems.

We had been looking at Jettas and were trying to decide between the 1.8L Turbo charged gasoline engine and the 1.9L Turbodiesel. The TDI was a much better choice, especially since the engine has proved to be much more reliable than the 1.8L turbo. There is plenty of torque, and the car feels like it has a significantly larger engine. The ride quality is excellent for a car of this size. The fuel economy is also excellent. I prefer the exterior styling to that of the new 2006 Jetta, but that is simply a matter of personal taste. If you are thinking of buying a Volkswagen, ALWAYS consider a turbodiesel. They are by far the most popular engine elsewhere in the world, and are the most reliable.

To be honest I love my car. I don't love my local VW dealership. Every time I take her in for a $100 oil change something needs to be fixed. However, being female I always go for a second opinion before I get anything done and half the time they are just trying to rip me off. The catalytic converter did go. But it was under and extended warranty because there was an error in all 1.8ts in 2001. The O2 sensors. Fine, it was time for them to go. As for the rest I will never go back to my dealership unless I have a problem no one else can figure out.

I bought the Jetta TDI about a year ago, and have not been sorry. In terms of reliability and ergonomics, it was and is the hands down winner in its class. I get about 39MPG in mostly highway driving, which is slighly less milage then the advertised 41 highway. Bottom line: spend the extra $$$ and get the Jetta!

The engine, suspension and transmission have been excellent. The brakes as well as the fit and finish have been a constant source of aggrevation. Although properly cared for the supposed quality BBS rims have been CRAP! Rattles in the speaker area, faulty rotors and rims that pit/clear coat failure make me a rather proturbed owner. After ditching a 99' Beetle for similar reasons, this one will follow shortly. My days with Volkswagen have come to an end.

Handles well. The seats collect fuzz- balls, however with a little work and a pet sponge they can be removed. Rubber interior parts peel. We've replaced the door handles twice and now the armrest is peeling. By the way the armrest also broke it won't hold position. Some of the interior lights work sporatically. The regular sevice maintenance is expensive. The 50000 mile scheduled maintenance costs about $375 and cosists of mostly checking things and replacing plugs, air filter, a tire rotation and an oil change. Good news is my windows haven't yet fallen out.

I bought this car in February of 2009. It had 87,000 miles on it. I got it for a good price because the glove box was broken and the seller wanted to get rid of it. Bad idea. Soon after driving it around the grill fell off, the driver's mirror fell off, the seats don't recline, the lid that covers the outlet didn't close, the MAF sensor has been replaced 3 times, if you spill water on the seats it stains, and today my trunk decided to stop opening. Either do your research before you buy a Jetta (I would not recommend it however) or buy a Mazda, which I am about to do if I can sell it.

Bought a 2002 Jetta wagon in Oct 2001 and I love the car. I got the 2.0 liter 5-speed manual transmission and this car has no problems accelerating with one person. The cornering is excellent and the ride feels like a sports car. The interior looks and feels great (esp. at night). Small size makes parking easy. The wagon gives you almost as much cargo space as a small SUV with much better gas mileage.

The dashboard, the front end, the steering column, etc. I had to be towed out of my own driveway when the computer failed and the car wouldn't go into gear. Now my directional signals don't work. The dealerships mechanics are terrible, what's the use of a warranty when they keep telling you nothing is wrong? For this money you should buy something else.

We have already had the tires replaced at 40,000 mi. and the brakes had to be replaced at 27,000 mi. The plastic section below the grill has come off twice. The car is noisy and has no power. I have had nothing but problems with my '01 GLX VR6 sedan. The biggest and most frustrating problem I have had is everytime I would use my rear defroster, the radio would go complete static. VW worked on this for over a year taking my car in over 10 times and finally this month just fixed the problem after a brand new radio ( that wasn't the problem) and finally a new rear window. The first week I had my new car the snaps that on the mats all broke off, my car wouldn't run one night because it was raining and they had to put new coiling in the engine, the drivers heated seat has not been working, the engine is not smooth and many times "skips".

Let me start by saying, everyone should stop comparing this to the BMW 3 series. It's more appropriate to compare the sister car, the A4 to the BMW. Compare the Jetta to the Acura Integra, but not cars priced about $10k more! Although, the fact that people compare the two says a great deal about the car. The car handles great, it's got plenty of power, it was reasonably priced especially considering all the features the car has. I've put a lot of mileage on the car in the first year and had no problems.

I got this lovely little VW eight years ago after driving an old model Ford Explorer and I loved the change! The Jetta has been so reliable and comfortable. Not to mention much better in gas mileage. The console is very convenient with all knobs and buttons within an easy hands reach. Very comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Not to mention a HUGE trunk for such a small car. Very well crafted and sturdy. I always felt safe driving her. In almost eight years, she only was in the shop once for a sensor failure. With punctual oil changes and maintanence, the Jetta will run like new for a loooong time!

Well, I love how this car drives, feels and performs... that is when it is not at the dealership. This car has been at the shop (Gene Messer VW) at least 15 times since it was purchased a little over two years ago. One time they had the car for six weeks because of the check engine light. For some reason, it always seems like there are several things wrong. Yikes, it is by far the worst car I have ever owned. Some problems include: Check engine light, airbag light, turbo, paint, rattles and other things.... Also, the service department has the worst setup I have ever seen. I really do think that these people have no idea how to work on their cars

Driving my Jetta has been great-the engine is wonderfully responsive, especially in 2nd & 3rd gears. Powerful enough to have fun, not so powerful that I get into trouble. The interior is of great quality, but the ergonomics aren't great - stereo and HVAC controls are a stretch. Seat could be more supportive. I love my Jetta, despite all the problems. It rides and drives like a much more expensive German car. My friend has an Audi and I fell I got the same car for thousands less.

Beware of the service department

The best all-around compact sedan for $20,000: Faster than most small cars, good fuel economy for such a powerful car, handles good but doesn't ride harsh, very good interior quality and ergonomics (besides the cupholders), and a long list of standard features. Of course nothing's perfect: Quiet cabin helps rattles from the dashboard and doors sound more prevalent(door rattles can be dispatched by wrapping electrical tape around the "U" shaped door latch). Service departments are lousy. This has been verified by numerous owners around the country.

Where do I begin...Lets start with the peeling paint on the hood and roof. Not exactly showroom quality and its only two years old. I have replaced the rear brakes and calipers two times in the past 36K miles. My Maxima is going on 40K miles on the original brakes! Tail lights seem to burn out bulbs regularly to the point where I actually have a supply in the trunk and the brakes sound like a fog horn when backing up. According to two dealerships..."this is just how it is!" The pads are dragging against the rotors and there is no way to prevent it....right! What else..oh yeah..the chronic ignition coil failure and that horrible turbo lag.

I had 3 major complaints. 1st, from day one the car had many unidentified interior squeaks and rattles that the dealer couldn't/wouldn't fix. 2nd, the 150 hp 1.8t is not a very powerful motor, but it was always enough to make the front wheels break free, causing a nasty, jarring hop under hard acceleration. 3rd, the damn check engine light was on for the last 10000 miles I owned the car. The dealer was always good about fixing whatever was wrong for free, but the light never stayed off for more than a week. In spite of all that, it was a lot of fun, and it always got me where I needed to go.

Good car...If You Have a Lot of Money to Waste

This car is fun to drive and all, but I don't know how much fun it can be if you see your bank balance going down so fast every time you go for a repair and you have to go for a repair just like you go for a hair cut. It may be its just happening to me, I don't know, but its very frustrating. I've also owned a Japanese made car and it ran fine even until 100,000+ miles, without any issues until I sold it. The car is comfortable for long trips, luxurious, very fast and stuff....but all the money we have to spend on repairs just undermines the positivity. This is not a reliable car.

I've always wanted a jetta so of course my I had to get a jetta. The first year was great. By the time the second year came the problems just would not stop. There's this gross stuff coming from the door that hardens. There's obviously something wrong with my transmission and it chuckles backwards at times. Dealership insists there's nothing wrong with it everytime. Each snowstorm the guy has issues with traction even after changing to brand new tires. The velour seats are horrible with everything sticking to it. I can't wait till I get rid of this car.

My wife and I just bought the 2001 Jetta a couple days ago. It's really her car more than it is mine. So far we love the power of the turbo. The leather is pretty comfortable and the exterior looks really sharp. We love the sunroof and the heated seats.

a.m. radio went out at about 45k $600 dealer quote to replace. the transmission literally fell out before 25k. the passanger side mirror defrost has never worked though i have had it replaced a couple of times. the sunroof drain clogs periodically and starts dripping into the car via the interior lights. a can open is required for anyone over 5' to get in and out of the back seat. interior coating peels constantly. armrest storage latch snaps off randomly (4 times) the front bumper catches or snags on parking curbs and rips. diesal fuel has remained much higher than premium unleaded defeating the noise for mileage trade. v.w. floor mats replaced a number of times only to fall apart quickly.
