2000 Jetta GL

The Jetta I have driven for the last 9/10 years has been good to me overall. That said, I would not buy another Volkswagen the next time I purchase a car. It is a sharp looking vehicle, fun to drive, and very comfortable. My issues have mainly been with the quirkiness of mechanical instruments and engine parts. I think you could find a Japanese car for the same money and find better reliability. Common issues include replacing the following: Water pump (impeller is plastic on original and designed to fail; eventually the inside of it melted and had to be replaced. The catalytic converter needed replacing (warranty is 10yr/120K miles FYI). And various other check engine lights etc.

Love/hate relationship

This is my second Jetta. I have replaced the water pump, power steering pump (all under warranty), ignition coil and wires (cost $400!). At this point, I only have 30,000 miles on the car and I worry that it will turn into a major nightmare. I have a current problem with a very rough idle and start, but the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. I love the design, handling and performance, but I am disapointed with the quality. My cupholders, and armrest have all broken and been fixed. My back seat cupoholder is now broken again. My other problem with the car is that it squeaks and rattles a lot....good thing for the nice monsoon stereo.

I owned a 5 speed 2000 Jetta for about 7 years, bought it used with 4,000 miles on it. Overall I was really satisfied; never had any major malfunction and never got a Check Engine light on. Drove it for about 50,000 miles. I actually bought another one but automatic when I passed this on to my wife. Same good experience overall. However, did experience the issues with the locks and windows. Very hard to diagnose and repair. Fortunately got guidance on how to repair them by myself in a VW forum and fixed them all, but was hard nonetheless. It appears to be that after reaching the 8 yrs threshold, soldering joints in the electronics start to fail.

Traded in an SUV for this car when it was 3 years old and had about 30,000 miles. After getting over the initial shock of how tiny the vehicle was, almost everything has been positive since. This is the second-best car my family has owned (the first was a '98 Cabrio). We've had GM, Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, but nothing like the tight handling of the VW. At 135k, still a quiet, smooth ride. We've been through two minivans in the time we've had the Jetta, and it might be time to replace the Jetta next, though it's showing no signs of quitting. Dealt with the CEL for the O2 sensor issue for about 4 years-- but not too much just to ignore. Also had some engine fan issues after 100k.

Over all, I am more than satisfied with my Jetta. I live in Colorado, so power in little cars is scarce, but my Jetta climbs in the mountains without making a fuss. Yah, I wish I had the 1.8T because of the lack of acceleration (still smokes Civics), but for the money, you get a lot with the GL. Most of the bells and whistles found only as options on other cars are standard and as far as a luxurious feel, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda take a back seat. My only gripe is that my dealership used a cheap 'clear-bra' and it's starting to fade and they won't accept responsibility since the company that installed them went bankrupt.
