This car is fun and sporty, I just bought it 2 days ago and its been good. I bought it with 97,XXX miles. I don't have any check engine lights so far and no catalytic converter issues yet. My issues with the car are the cheap interior parts. The cup holder can only support the weight of one really small cup without breaking off (mine was broke at purchase) and I see why! The arm rest, glove box, door panels, floor vent (passenger side), the seatbelt covers on the floor, ash tray, etc. all cracked or broken. That's what you get when you have a awesome German car with the interior parts made in Mexico. As to the rest of the car, very nice quality! At 100K mi, not worth more than $5000.00

Just a good car

Bought it brand new in 2001. Sure, the window lifts were quick to go out, and there were several other minor recalls, but it keeps on ticking. I use it primarily as a commuter car, driving about 40 miles a day. Love the mpg, love the styling. I'm just now approaching 100k miles. I sunk $1,500 into it recently for preventative maintenance (incl. New timing belt), but consider it a good investment. Interior wear and tear has taken its toll - the glove box arm is broken, as is the arm rest latch, but I can live with that. The car looks great, is fun to drive (every once in a while is quite sluggish in 1st gear), but has been a great car.

Trading in for another Jetta

This is a great economical car that is comfortable for all passengers. Mine survived some 550 mile work weeks and 12 miles of gravel roads a day. The suspension took a hit here and there but I treated it like a farm truck from time to time. Mine still runs and drives great at almost 172k. I'm in the market for a new 5spd Jetta.

I do love my Jetta, but it's got it's annoying quirks. First the CEL pops on for just about anything, especially with the AC in use. The front end makes loud thudding noises which no one can seem to cure. Lousy cup holder and cheap (and expensive) plastic interior parts. But the engine is still solid at 185,000 mi and it's a lot of fun to drive. Has also been very reliable without any major breakdowns other than a water pump, starter, and brakes. Given the age and miles it's expected. These cars are timelessly stylish, handle well, get great mileage (31MPG!), and can stand the test of time and distance as long as they are taken care of properly. It's overall a good quality car.
