a Fun Car
This is my 2nd VW camper. This model I could actually pass other cars even on a hill! The stove, refrig etc were also a marked upgrade from my old Westphalia. My wife and I have been able to spend many nights at some remote areas not accessible to motels and commercial campgrounds. We were used to not requiring a "hookup" for our electrical equipment. The gas gives us lots of freedom. We'd travel with our kayak and bikes.
Worst vehicle ever
I bought a Eurovan from a someone because my wife loved VWs. Within one year of ownership, we had transmission problems, stalling issues, the A/C went out, and it needs a new catalytic converter. In addition to other stupid problems, like the door locks quit working, etc. I've put more money into this than any other car I've ever owned. Volkswagens cost too much to repair. Also, it is underpowered, having only about 100 horsepower on a vehicle of this size, it loses speed going up hills on the highway. After this and my wife's lousy Jetta, I will never buy another VW product again.

Problematic Vehicle
I fully understand Toledo Joe's frustration. I had all the problems he had with my CL Eurovan, plus more. The rear A/C unit went within the first year, along with the battery, then the horn, and the odometer. I had the auto shift lever stuck at park three times at carparks, the last time resulting in me having to tow it to the dealer. The engine is under powered, the response very sluggish. There is a big thump every time the automatic gear shifts. Rain sips through from the window and the wind shield. The new Passat looks nice but I don't think I have the courage to try another VW.
The reviewers hate what the owners love
Initially quite pricey, but I have been won over and my wife loves it completely. There is no other van on the market that can do all the things this can. This is not a car and thus not an Odessy or Chrysler. It's a daily family driver, a camper,a hauler and a long-trip cruiser. It can cruise at 80 all day, has better seats than my Audi A4, handles safely if not sportily, and pulls my horse trailer. My brother purchased a 2000.5 and is very pleased, using it for both family use and to tow his SCCA race cars. It's far from perfect, but there is no competition in the marketplace. The idiosyncracies are a real problem only if you don't really need this type of vehicle.
I shopped around
I was looking for something bigger with more room for people and cargo. I love this van. Easy to drive, roomy, great visability, short turning radius, and not your typical minivan. I drove a ton of used vans before I settled on thie one and I am very happy that I did.
