2024 Toyota bZ4X
This is my first Toyota EV and my 7th EV over the past 10 years. Initially, I was very excited about the Made In Japan quality, but that excitement quickly faded due to several disappointing issues—namely with DC charging, the air conditioning system, and the paint quality.
Just two months after delivery, the AC stopped working. When I brought the car to the dealership, the mechanic … astonishingly asked me to read the manual to learn how to operate the AC (he even gave me the page number)!!! After nearly suffering heatstroke while sitting in the car during a DC fast charge session on a hot California day, I insisted the most experienced technician inspect the system. The AC compressor was ultimately found to be defective and had to be replaced—at under 2,000 miles.
Another major problem has been the car’s behavior at DC fast charging stations (EVgo, for example). The car often stops charging at 95–98% battery, never reaching 100%. According to a Toyota mechanic, the onboard computer generates an error code and stops charging to prevent the battery from overheating—supposedly to help it last 300,000 miles. I explained that none of my previous and present EVs had this problem, but he simply told me to take it up with Toyota. When I did, Toyota's response wasn’t a fix—just an email suggesting I return the car. Go figure.
The third issue is the poor paint quality. This is my fourth Toyota, and it has a black exterior. Any contact with the paint leaves scratches. In fact, the driver's side door handle area is already covered in marks from simply opening the door with my fingernails. None of my previous Toyotas had paint this fragile.
That said, there are some positives. The seats are comfortable, the stereo system is decent, and the instrument layout is intuitive. The build quality inside and outside reflect Toyota’s usual superb fit and finish, and the interior space is well thought out—especially with the seats folded down for hauling larger items. The headlights are impressively bright, and overall, the car drives very well. It's also worth noting that the car can charge to 100% at home—this limitation of charing to 100% only applies to DC fast charging.
However, efficiency could be improved. Turning on the AC on a hot summer day can cause the range to drop significantly—sometimes by as much as 50 miles.
One final (minor) annoyance: the hood design includes a joint that collects water and makes drying the car after car wash more difficult. I see no aerodynamic benefit to it, and it just complicates maintenance.
In summary, while I believe Toyota will address these problems in future updates, I cannot recommend the 2024 bZ4X at this time.
