2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost
The Rolls-Royce Ghost is everything you expect it to be in the areas that matter most. It is exceptionally smooth, quiet, comfortable, and effortless to drive. The ride quality is superb, the cabin is beautifully isolated from the outside world, and the overall sense of refinement is extraordinary. On a recent road trip, I was also pleasantly surprised to average just under 20 MPG, … which is quite respectable for a car of this size and power.
What surprises me, though, is how many small ergonomic and convenience details seem less well thought out than they were on the previous generation.
For example, the seat adjustment, memory, massage controls are mounted on a panel beneath the armrest on each of the four doors. That panel is barely visible to the person sitting there. These are controls that should be intuitive and immediately accessible, yet their location makes them unnecessarily awkward to use.
There is a similar problem with the otherwise very attractive dashboard clock. The face is deeply recessed into the trim, and from the driver’s normal seating position, the left side of the clock is partially obscured. It’s a beautiful design detail that somehow manages not to be fully visible to the person sitting in the most important seat in the car.
The windshield-wiper controls are another example. On the previous-generation Ghost, the rain sensor was activated by pressing the end of the stalk. If you wanted a single manual wipe, you simply pressed the stalk downward, without disturbing the automatic setting. On the current car, automatic operation is one click upward from Off, while a single wipe is one click downward. If the rain sensor is already active and you want a single wipe, you have to move the stalk down two positions, and when you release it, the system ends up switched off. It is a surprisingly clumsy solution to something the previous car handled elegantly.
There are also several useful touches from the previous generation that have disappeared. The old car had lighting inside the door storage bins that illuminated automatically when you reached into them. The current Ghost does not. Likewise, the previous car allowed you to open the trunk by sweeping your foot beneath the rear bumper when the key was in your pocket. The current car lacks that feature. Neither sounds terribly important until you need it — and I have missed both of them.
One feature I particularly like on the current Ghost is the powered closing of all four doors. It is wonderfully Rolls-Royce and genuinely useful. Given that capability, however, it would be even better if the driver could also control the rear doors from the driver’s seat, both opening and closing them.
None of these issues changes the fact that the Ghost is an extraordinary automobile. Its refinement, comfort, silence, and overall driving experience are exceptional. What makes the shortcomings frustrating is precisely how good the rest of the car is. Rolls-Royce has mastered some extraordinarily difficult engineering challenges, yet a few relatively simple usability details feel either overlooked or, in several cases, less sophisticated than those on the previous generation.
For a car at this level, the small things matter. Rolls-Royce gets most of the big things spectacularly right, but I wish a little more of the thoughtful convenience and ergonomic finesse of the previous generation had carried forward.
