2006 Pontiac Solstice
I owned a 2003 Mazda Miata, it was a fun reliable roadster, sold it with 32K miles on it and purchased the 2006 Pontiac Solstice, and based on my experience, the Solstice is better for several reasons. First, it is faster and more peppy than my Miata, even after I put headers and a new exhaust on my Miata, still not as fast as the stock 5 speed Solstice. Second., the maintenance on the … inline 2.4 GM engine is minimal, like change the fluids and filters and enjoy a couple hundred thousand miles of driving. That has been the biggest surprise for me, the cost to keep up the Solstice is dirt cheap. I purchased mine with 24K miles and took it on a 13 hour trip to my hometown, 26 hours round trip in 2022. The car did not use a drop of synthetic oil and it did not lose any coolant. None. No oil leaks, no gasket problems. At highway speeds the car revs much lower than the Miata as well resulting in better gas mileage. Look, I loved the Miata, may still get the RF model some day. They are bulletproof as well. My point is this, if you are looking for a preowned convertible and you like the looks of the Solstice as much as I do, you can buy it with confidence, the 2.4 engine from that era has glowing reviews. Around the 2013-15 they screwed up the engine in the Equinox I heard, but back in 06, cannot believe how shocked I was to stumble upon this gem. It will turn 30K miles in April 2023 probably. When it comes time to sell your Miata or Solstice, do it yourself. Many dealers have an old school approach still and want to give you a dirt cheap price for your well maintained car only to double or triple that number and put it right back on the lot. You should make a little money, so easy to do. As with all preowned convertibles, maintenance history and how the car has been washed, waxed and exposed to the elements all play a role in its value. I considered trading for a Jeep and had offers for my Solstice from $10K down to $6K for trade in. Almost did the $10K offer, but, at the end of the day, as much as I love the Wrangler you almost need to see a Chiropractor after any lengthy drive and count on having a headache from all the dam noise. So, cruising on the island with Solstice will do for now! Very happy I purchased this car. Could an 09 with the insane 2.0 turbo be on the horizon?? Maybe, but, they do cost more to maintain and maintence with the turbo engine is HUGE. Overall, extremely happy with this car!
