2006 Ford Five Hundred
Bought my Ford 500 SEL for almost nothing in 2024 and love it. Typically do extensive research prior to purchasing and pleasantly surprised at the takeaways:
1) Shares the (Ford owned) Volvo S80 & XC90 chassis which explains the smooth ride having owned an XC90.
2) Rides high with an Explorer vibe, having also owned their flagship SUV gas hog.
3) The SEL FWD is frugal on the hwy. 30+ … via cruise control. Low 20's in town. Amazing for a nimble 3,600 lb car.
4) Styling holds up. A contemporary yet classic look. Leaving the gym often has me scouring that parking lot full of newer cars. For the euro-driving crowd, squint & you may see a Passat.
5) Acceleration is sluggish, but comfortable. My goal is commuting for appointments - not drag racing - so very practical.
6) Interior is clean & spacious. Wouldn't mind having the Limited's leather seats but styling is classic, durable, easy to clean & still in good shape. The wood trim dash finish & dual climate control is straight from Volvo's design.
7) Good sound system and a fan of the old school multi-disc CD player built into the radio
8) Massive trunk with fold-down seats & high interior headroom - it truly is an SUV alternative
Summary:
This has surprisingly and unexpectedly become one of my favorite cars to own in recent memory. It needed cosmetic TLC when bought used, but the motor purrs and the transmission shifts as smooth as silk. Overall just a great package.
IMO the Ford 500 is one of those "below the radar" gems floating around on the secondary used car market. If you find a good one, snatch it up.
