2016 BMW X5 eDrive
The all electric range is ~16 miles which covers my commute one way. It is pedestrian driving in all electric mode but satisfactory. Combined electric motor and Gas engine power train is downright zippy for an SUV this size/weight.
Update: the electric power train battery has lost significant capacity and the range has decreased considerably over the years. Winter months are a struggle … for all electric powered cars but the degradation in range from nearly 20 miles all electric down to ~12 miles has had a serious impact on my initial review. Based on my driving habits, that change in performance decreased the overall MPG from over 50 mpg down to around 30mpg. At 30mpg, this isn’t a significant difference between what you can get with other well appointed 5 passenger SUVs and the complex hybrid power train becomes superfluous. Additionally, with the electric battery charge used up more quickly, it is not quite as enjoyable to drive this extremely heavy vehicle with only the 4 cylinder engine doing the heavy lifting without reliable electric assistance. It is still a nice looking, comfortable family vehicle but the degraded performance and limited cargo space make it a tough sell against similar quality options at a lower price. However the updated model for 2022 includes a higher capacity battery paired with a six cylinder gas engine so I may revisit that decision when it is time to upgrade.
