2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
I bought this 2022 Corolla Hybrid new with the goal to save gas and last for 15 plus years of commute driving. The EPA mileage of 52 combined was easily exceeded in the first 2 days of driving it. I'm now getting 70+ mpg on my commute which is a mix of city/freeway/hills/bumper to bumper, etc. This car excels in everything I want for commuter car. The drive is supremely smooth at … take-off and is still smooth and quiet at speed and handling is quick and light for the intended purpose of the car. If you drive this car like it was designed for, you can easily get 60+mpg. I'm very happy with the car, especially with gas in the $5-7/gallon range. 75mpg gets me about 700 miles a tank just after the "low fuel light" comes on. The hybrid system will disappoint you if you are looking for a "speed demon", in that case there are plenty of sporty cars to choose from. But I don't know of any car but a EV or hybrid that will get that kind of mpg no matter how you drive it. This car is very sensitive to driving style, but with record high gas prices I can drive in the slow lane at the 65mph speed limit.
Update: I now have 12600 miles on the car and all the above still applies. Mild California winter weather drops the mpg to about 67. But now the mpg is back to about 72 as the weather is warmer. I have found that freeway at 55mph and above for long periods will max the mpg to the 60 range. At that speed for long distances that engine runs about 75-80% of the time leaving little time for “EV” battery only mode. But as i have said above i have never had any car that got even close to 60+mpg no matter how I drive.
There is one small issue with the displayed MPG on the console. It seems to always to run about 3-5 MPG above the actual measured MPG during fill up. I wish there was a way to “calibrate” this to dial in more closely. In all, I’m very happy with the car.
