The 2017 Subaru Legacy is something of a dark horse in the midsize sedan class. Typically overshadowed by flashier and better-known entries, the Subaru is nonetheless worthy of consideration. This is especially true for those who live where inclement weather can make driving a chore and even a hazard.
A standard all-wheel-drive (AWD) system separates the Legacy from its peers. Though a few rivals do offer AWD, it is typically available only with the more powerful and thirstier engine options. The 2017 Subaru Legacy, on the other hand, provides the added grip and confidence of AWD on all trim levels and with both of its engine choices: a 2.5-liter, 175-horsepower four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter, 256-hp six-cylinder. Both send power to all four wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Even with all-wheel drive, which usually has a negative effect on fuel economy, the Legacy is fuel efficient. EPA estimates range from 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway) with the six-cylinder engine to 29 mpg combined (25 city/34 highway) with the four. For a midsize car with AWD, the latter figures are especially impressive. The cost of this economy is that the Legacy's performance lags behind most of its competitors.
In addition to the greater safety on slippery roads, the Legacy has the EyeSight safety suite as an option on every trim level except the base version. EyeSight provides features such as lane departure warning and intervention and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Legacy's top-notch crash-test scores add even more peace of mind.
The 2017 Subaru Legacy is available in trim levels that run from the base 2.5i through the 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited. The first four have Subaru's four-cylinder engine. The six-cylinder option comes only in the singular, loaded 3.6R Limited trim. Key standard features on the entry-level Legacy include a rearview camera, satellite radio and smartphone app integration. Moving up through the ranks adds luxury and convenience items such as heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry/ignition and leather upholstery.
Apart from its AWD feature, the Legacy is not a standout in other areas, such as styling or cabin ambiance. That said, its affable, well-rounded nature means there's no glaring weaknesses either, and so it merits consideration if you're looking for a midsize sedan.
