The EQS offers impressive range in its base and all-wheel-drive trims. The base trim's real-word Edmunds range test results beat the current Tesla Model S's EPA estimate of 405 miles, and does it with a more refined interior and cutting-edge tech. (In our testing, we've found Tesla models typically have real-world range results near, or just shy, of EPA estimates.) Even the high-performance EQS AMG version, which can produce thumping 751 horsepower in short bursts, is rated for nearly 280 miles on a full charge.

For 2023, Mercedes-Benz expands the EQS lineup with a new dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version of the base model trim, the EQS 450 4Matic. A few other new features trickle down from the S-Class and even the Mercedes-Maybach, such as adjustable rear seat overhead lighting, tablet gesture controls, and upgraded pillows, headrests, and slightly extended seat cushions. A new 20-inch AMG wheel design is also available.

How does the EQS AMG drive? This may be an AMG, but it's also a nearly three-ton sedan. Even with AMG's engineers working their magic, there's only so much you can do to hide the car's weight. On our test track, its braking and handling performance were no better than the EQS 580's. They were also worse than what we've seen from the Tesla Model S Plaid and some versions of the Porsche Taycan. In corners, the AMG EQS exhibits more body roll and brake dive than we would expect from a sport sedan of any ilk, and the steering doesn't offer much in the way of feedback. We do like the rear-axle steering, which helps the AMG EQS feel more nimble in tight corners and makes it easier to park by reducing the turning radius.

With a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds, the AMG EQS isn't as quick as some of its rivals either, but there's more than enough power for real-world driving. The AMG EQS moves with verve at any speed, so passing on the highway is a breeze. The car isn't overly sensitive with either the accelerator or brake pedal, and we're happy that Mercedes offers one-pedal driving.

Comfort

How comfortable is the EQS AMG? As you might expect from anything wearing a Mercedes-Benz emblem, the EQS is comfortable and quiet on the road even in AMG guise. The suspension is compliant enough to smooth out most bumps. We think it's on par with the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan in this respect, though the AMG EQS is still not quite as refined as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Helping comfort were our test vehicle's optional heated, ventilated and massaging front seats and heated and massaging rear seats. There's tons of adjustment for the bolsters, lumbar and more, and the padding is more than adequate for a long day of driving. There's minimal road and wind noise too.

The climate control is almost all touchscreen-based but is easier to use than most touchscreen interfaces. There's a screen that provides real-time air quality inside and outside of the cabin, which we found very cool even if it is a bit of a gimmick. Both the seat heating and ventilation functions are very effective, and the optional massaging feature is helpful to keep the blood flowing on longer drives. Rear passengers get their own climate control settings.

Interior

How’s the interior? The AMG EQS' stunning dashboard-wide Hyperscreen sets the scene for its passengers and the standard for the class. This infotainment complex is certainly a lot to take in, but ultimately the system is not hard to figure out. Despite its fairly large size, the EQS offers good all-around visibility. Only the somewhat narrow rear window and large rear seat headrests compromise the view out the back of the Benz. Thankfully the surround-view camera system is very clear and takes the guesswork out of maneuvering in tight spaces.

Oddly, the otherwise roomy EQS is lacking rear seat space. Rear legroom is OK, but the elevated rear seat cushion means there's not much headroom for passengers 6 feet tall or taller. This is a strange oversight in a car of this size and a problem you don't have in the Tesla Model S or Lucid Air.

How’s the tech? Mercedes remains a leader with its MBUX infotainment system. The voice-controlled virtual assistant is particularly helpful for adjusting controls or bringing up information without having to take your eyes off the road. The Burmester audio system sounds great, and the integrated navigation system is useful for routing to nearby charging stations.

You want charging ports? Well, the EQS has a total of eight USB ports, which feels a bit like overkill in a cabin that seats five at the most. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard and a nice convenience to have when it's working. (We experienced some connection issues during our testing.)

Mercedes-Benz advanced driving aids work great and are among the best in the business. We wouldn't call their operation faultless, but overall the adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot warning system and 360-degree cameras make driving considerably easier and safer.

Storage

How’s the storage? The EQS doesn't have a front trunk like the Tesla Model S does, but we'd argue it doesn't need one. The rear cargo hatch is huge, accommodating 22 cubic feet of stuff behind the rear seats. And if you need more space, the seats fold flat in the 40/20/40-split configuration. Storage for small items in the cabin is equally impressive, with an assortment of generously sized bins with cleverly organized compartments.

Got small kids to drive around? There's a good amount of space for installing child safety seats in the back. However, the angled bottom rear seat cushion can make it a little tricky to securely strap a seat down. The lower car seat anchors and the rear top tethers are pretty easy to access, though.

Range and Efficiency

How economical is the EQS AMG? The AMG EQS has an EPA-estimated range of 277 miles, less than the EQS 450+ (EPA estimate of 350 miles) and EQS 580 (EPA estimate of 340 miles). That said, like those two cars, the AMG EQS trounced that number in Edmunds' real-world EV range testing, traveling 332 miles on a single charge. We measured consumption at 38.7 kWh/100 miles, a bit worse than some of its rivals.

While the range figures aren't as good as those for the Model S Plaid or Lucid Air, we were impressed that the AMG EQS exceeded its EPA estimate. We've never had any Tesla or Lucid match its EPA estimate, much less exceed it.

Value

Is the EQS AMG a good value? The AMG EQS costs about the same as a Porsche Taycan Turbo, though the Mercedes comes better equipped from the start. Our test vehicle came with several thousand dollars' worth of options, including carbon-ceramic brakes for enhanced stopping power and upgraded rear seats with a massaging function. Build quality is stellar, and we think the EQS uses nicer materials for the upholstery and trim than the Tesla Model S or Lucid Air.

The four-year/50,000-miles basic and powertrain warranty is average for the class, but Mercedes offers only four years of rust protection, less than most rivals. The battery is warrantied to maintain 70% of capacity for 10 years/155,000 miles.

We've had mixed feelings about the EQS' design since it debuted. It's not quite as handsome or as svelte-looking as some of its rivals, but the AMG model gives the EQS a little more jazz thanks to some AMG-specific design touches. On the other hand, the interior offers plenty of personality. While we may not always love the touchscreen functionality, the dash-spanning displays give the car a bit of a futuristic feel. Same goes for things like the multi-color interior lighting. But a lot of this is available in non-AMG EQS models for less money.

The AMG EQS also isn't as fun to drive as we hoped. Sure, it's amazingly quick, but so is everything else in the class. And with a 0 to 60 mph of 3.1 seconds, wild as it may sound, the AMG EQS is actually kind of slow for the class. It's also not as much fun to drive as something like a Taycan or even a Model S, both of which feels sharper and more nimble on a winding road. The car's weight can make it feel ponderous and soft, so it doesn't reward driver engagement in the same way. It's a bummer as gas-powered AMG models tend to be a bit more manic than their competitors.

Which EQS does Edmunds recommend?

If you just want an EV alternative to a growing mass of Teslas, a base 450+ in Premium trim does just fine. It gets you the maximum range and comes loaded with plenty of luxury features. That said, the Pinnacle trim is a pretty good deal. The extra cost is worth it to get high-luxe items like massaging front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, and upgraded infotainment.

The Porsche Taycan is one of the best cars on the road today, electric or not. It's not as spacious as the EQS, but it's comfortable and well appointed. It's also way more fun to drive.
