Compact sedans have never been better, but if you're looking for the one that consistently seems to rise above the rest, check out the Mazda 3. Through three generations, it has always been and continues to be one of the most engaging compact sedans to drive. You feel more connected to the road than you do in most competitors. With this latest 3, however, the ride is significantly more comfortable.
There are two body styles available: a sedan and this hatchback. Each comes with a lot of standard equipment for the money, and can be loaded up with high-end luxury features like a heated power driver seat and adaptive cruise control.
This i model gets a 155-hp 2.0-liter "Skyactiv" four-cylinder and it accelerates significantly quicker than its competitors, while returning equal or better fuel economy. If this was the only engine available, we probably wouldn't complain, but the sportier s model has a 184-hp 2.5-liter and only loses 2 mpg.
The cabin has excellent materials and a minimalist design with a low-dash that creates a sense of openness. This is a touchscreen, but its many audio or optional navigation functions can also be controlled with the sort of button and knob set-up you'd find in an Audi. It's a system that works very well. Lesser equipped 3's still keep this dashtop unit, but a standard radio display and buttons are in place of the touchscreen.
The 3 offers enough room in the back for a 6-footer, while space up front is generous too. The seats are very supportive - both around corners and on long-distance road trips.
In total, there are very few trade-offs with the Mazda 3. It's comfortable and fun to drive. It's efficient and quick. It looks good and it's easy to live with. It's frankly hard to beat.
