2021 Maserati Quattroporte Review

  • Engaging handling for a large sedan
  • Ferrari-derived engines with an exotic exhaust note
  • Uniquely Italian style in a class dominated by German automakers
  • Lacks the polish and advanced technology of German rivals
  • Firm ride with 20- and 21-inch wheels
  • Dealer network could be limited depending on the region
  • New top-of-the-line Trofeo performance model
  • Updated front- and rear-end styling
  • New 10.1-inch infotainment screen
  • Part of the sixth Quattroporte generation introduced for 2013

The 2021 Maserati Quattroporte is a large luxury sedan that has served as the Italian automaker's flagship four-door model for decades. It's big, well appointed and — as you might expect from a car hailing from Italy — fast. That speed is brought to you thanks to a pair of turbocharged engines and relatively sporty suspension and handling. That's not to say it's all about speed with the Quattroporte. All Quattroportes are loaded with features and offer handsome and feature-rich cabins with plenty of space for people and cargo. It's getting a bit long in the tooth, but a number of rolling updates have kept it from feeling too stale.

For 2021, the Quattroporte gets a new, more powerful trim level: the Trofeo. The Trofeo model replaces the GTS in the Quattroporte lineup. Besides a bump in power, the Trofeo includes a sport-tuned suspension, performance brakes and tires, and a number of styling tweaks that help it stand out in a crowd.

And it is a crowded field. The Quattroporte is an alternative to the solid but somewhat ubiquitous lineup of large German luxury sedans. Rivals include the Porsche Panamera; the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and AMG GT sedan; the BMW 7 Series, Alpina B7 and 8 Series Gran Coupe; and the Audi A7 and A8. While the Quattroporte lacks the polish and some advanced features found in its German rivals, it has a flair that's hard to replicate elsewhere. It might not stand toe-to-toe with the competition on paper, but it's hard to put a price on personality.

Which Quattroporte does Edmunds recommend?

The new V8-powered Trofeo trim might get all the headlines thanks to its 203 mph top speed and Ferrari-like soundtrack, but we suggest going with the more affordable Quattroporte S. It's still quick thanks to a turbocharged V6, and it offers tons of features. Within the S range, our pick is the luxury-oriented GranLusso model.

Maserati Quattroporte models

The 2021 Maserati Quattroporte is available in two main trim levels: S and the new Trofeo trim. The S is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 (424 horsepower, 428 lb-ft of torque) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It's also available with all-wheel drive as the S Q4. The Quattroporte Trofeo uses a 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 (580 hp, 538 lb-ft) that makes more power than last year's V8-powered GTS model. All-wheel drive is not available on the Trofeo.

The Quattroporte S is available in three forms: S, S GranLusso and S GranSport. The luxury-oriented GranLusso and stylish GranSport models are basically upgrade packages for the standard model. All-wheel drive is available on all three. Features on the S include:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • Adaptive suspension dampers
  • Adaptive LED headlights (swivel as you turn the steering wheel for better illumination in curves)
  • LED taillights
  • Automatic high beams
  • Sunroof
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Power-adjustable, heated front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display with navigation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Harman Kardon audio system
  • Blind-spot monitor (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot)
  • Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Quattroporte and the car in front)
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Quattroporte and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
  • Automatic emergency braking (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)

The GranLusso package includes all basic S features, adding:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Upgraded leather upholstery
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Revised exterior trim
  • Power-adjustable pedals

The GranSport package builds off the base S with:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Revised front and rear fascias
  • Sport seats
  • Column-mounted paddle shifters
  • Heated sport steering wheel

The high-performance Trofeo model comes with a V8 engine. It includes most standard features from the Quattroporte S. Upgrades and changes include:

  • 21-inch wheels with performance tires
  • Upgraded brakes
  • Performance-tuned adaptive suspension
  • Revised exterior styling with red accents
  • Carbon-fiber exterior trim
  • Column-mounted shift paddles
  • Heated and ventilated sport seats
  • Power-adjustable pedals

Maserati Quattroporte vs. the competition

Maserati Quattroporte vs. Porsche Panamera

Despite its sizable proportions, the Porsche Panamera is one of the best-driving four doors around. It's fast and fun, but it doesn't sacrifice comfort and luxury for the sake of performance. Its hatchback design makes it more practical than the Quattroporte. It's less expensive, too, though the price gap can quickly disappear if you dip too deep into Porsche's seemingly endless list of options.

Maserati Quattroporte vs. Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

The four-door Mercedes-AMG GT is the fastest and most powerful four-door Mercedes has on offer. It's both engaging to drive and comfortable on the road, and raw acceleration is impressive no matter what engine is under the hood. The interior is small compared to the Maserati's, but it's no less luxurious. Like other sedans in this class, base prices undercut the Quattroporte by a sizable margin, though that gap closes when you look at higher-trim AMGs.

Maserati Quattroporte vs. BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a sleek four-door that serves as one of BMW's fastest and most powerful models. Like these other large luxury sedans, it strikes a good balance between comfort and performance. Pricing is in BMW's favor since you can get the V8-powered M850i for about the same outlay as the Quattroporte S.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 Maserati Quattroporte?

Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
