What's new
- SVR Carbon Edition and HSE Silver Edition introduced

- Diesel V6 engine is no longer available on base trim
- Part of the second Range Rover Sport model introduced in 2014
The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport — besides being somewhat of a mouthful to say — is the brand's midsize luxury SUV. It slots between the top-level Range Rover and the smaller Range Rover Velar. Understand that while it wears the Range Rover name, the Sport is considerably less expensive than the Range Rover.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR Carbon Edition 4dr SUV 4WD (5.0L 8cyl S/C 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.07 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.
Monthly estimates based on costs in Virginia

Avg. Midsize SUV
So what do you get by going with the Sport? Well, as the name might imply, it can be relatively sporty if you get it with one of its more powerful engines. A 355-horsepower six-cylinder engine is standard, but there's also an available diesel engine, a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a top-dog supercharged V8 with a thumping 516 hp. And being a Land Rover, the Range Rover Sport has respectable off-road capability, too.
The Range Rover Sport competes in a competitive class. Rivals include the Audi Q8, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne. Among this group the Range Rover Sport comes up a little short on polish — especially in terms of in-car technology features. There's also a fair amount of overlap within Land Rover's lineup, so cross-shopping the slightly smaller Velar, the three-row Discovery or even the new Defender could be a wise idea as well. But overall the Range Rover Sport's strong performance and appealing style make it worth checking out.
Which Range Rover Sport does Edmunds recommend?
The base SE trim comes relatively lightly equipped, so we suggest stepping up to the HSE Silver Edition. It's available with more powertrain options as well as more standard and optional features such as heated front and rear seats and blind-spot monitoring.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport models
The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available in seven trim levels: SE, HSE Silver Edition, HST, HSE Dynamic, Autobiography, SVR and SVR Carbon Edition. Land Rover offers an array of engines for the 2021 Range Rover Sport, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Engine offerings include a gasoline inline-six, a diesel V6, a supercharged V8 and a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. Availability varies depending on the trim.
SE
The base trim comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine (355 horsepower, 365 lb-ft). No other engine is offered on the SE. Standard features include:
- 19-inch wheels
- LED headlights
- Power liftgate
- Proximity keyless entry and push-button start
- Power-adjustable front seats
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Digital instrument panel
- 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
Every Range Rover Sport also comes with:
- Lane keeping assist (steers the Range Rover Sport back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
- Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
- Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
HSE Silver Edition
The HSE Silver Edition opens up the feature list, building on what the SE offers. In addition to the inline-six, the HSE Silver Edition is available with:
- Turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V6 (254 hp, 443 lb-ft)
- Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It generates a total of 398 hp and 472 lb-ft and gets an EPA-estimated 19 miles of all-electric range.
Other features for the HSE Silver Edition include:
- 21-inch wheels
- Panoramic sunroof
- Upgraded power-adjustable front seats
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Heated rear seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Front console refrigerator
- Four-zone automatic climate control
- Cabin air ionizer
- 19-speaker Meridian audio system
- Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
- Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
- Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Range Rover Sport and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
HST
The midlevel HST trim is only available with the turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, though it gets a slight bump in output, up to 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It's a sporty trim that builds off the base SE, though features generally mirror those on the HSE Silver Edition. Changes include:
- Adaptive suspension (enhances ride comfort and handling)
- Contrasting black roof
- Black exterior trim
- Aluminum interior trim
- Leather and simulated suede upholstery
HSE Dynamic
There's only one engine available on this trim, but it's a whopper. All HSE Dynamic models are powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 (518 hp, 461 lb-ft). Features are similar to the base SE trim, though it does include a few additional features from the HSE Silver Edition.
- 21-inch wheels
- Air suspension (can adjust the vehicle's ride height)
- Upgraded power-adjustable seats
- Panoramic sunroof
- 13-speaker Meridian audio system
- Additional leather trim
- Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert
- Driver attention warning
Autobiography
This is the most luxurious trim available on the Range Rover Sport. It's available with either the 5.0-liter V8 or the plug-in hybrid powertrain. It builds on the HSE Dynamic trim with:
- Black contrast roof
- Even more adjustments for the front seats
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Heated rear seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Soft-close doors (catch as they're being closed and gently pull shut)
- 19-speaker Meridian audio system
- Surround-view camera system
SVR
The Range Rover Sport SVR is one of the fastest SUVs on sale today. SVR models get the Autobiography's features and more power for the supercharged V8 (575 hp, 516 lb-ft) plus:
- SVR-tuned air suspension
- Upgraded brakes
- Front sport seats
- Sport steering wheel
SVR Carbon Edition
While Land Rover breaks this out into a separate trim, it's more of a package for the standard SVR. Upgrades include:
- 22-inch gloss black wheels
- Exposed carbon-fiber hood
- Carbon-fiber engine cover
- Carbon-fiber interior and exterior trim
The Range Rover Sport is available with a number of options. Notable ones include:
- Drive Pro Pack
- Blind-spot monitor (SE trim only)
- Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front and can also react to traffic signs and set speed)
- Upgraded frontal collision mitigation system
- Towing Pack
- Off-Road Pack
- Additional drive modes
- Transfer case with low range
- 23-speaker Meridian audio system
- Cabin air ionizer
- Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)

Compare the Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is the Edmunds Top Rated Luxury SUV for 2021. It excels at everything we expect from a luxury SUV, from premium interior appointments to loads of in-car tech and driver aids. But it lacks the Range Rover Sport's standard all-wheel drive and sporty handling. The Mercedes is significantly less expensive to start, though adding a lot of options will make these two SUVs more closely priced.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Porsche Cayenne
If you're looking for a luxury SUV that won't leave you bored, the Porsche Cayenne is well worth a look. It's a bit sharper to drive than the Range Rover Sport, and it doesn't sacrifice comfort for performance. Prices are close, though options can easily send the Cayenne's price skyward. It also lacks some of the Range Rover's standard features.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Land Rover Range Rover Velar
The Range Rover Velar is the Sport's smaller, less expensive and somewhat more stylish sibling. Passenger space is slightly down, but the Velar actually offers a bit more cargo space than the Sport. Tech and features are similar, though the Velar can't match the Sport's raw muscle and performance.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?
Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
