Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsBest launch involved moderate wheelspin to keep the engine in its powerband. Getting through the quarter-mile required 4 of the 5 gears. Shifter is remarkably smooth and precise, especially for cable-operated linkage, even when hurried.
Braking ratingAverage
Braking commentsFor such a small and light car, these are rather long and inconsistent stopping distances, ranging from 136, 139, 135, 134 and 137 feet, respectively. Front discs and rear drums mean ABS cycling is deliberately slow. Combine this with narrower, low-rolling-resistance tires, and a slightly heavier car compared to last year's Fit Sport, and this is what happens. Also there's some directional instability under full-ABS stops.
Handling ratingGood
Handling commentsSkid pad: Grip is just OK, but understeer is rather pronounced on the limit. The car responds slightly less favorably than it once did to throttle input around the circle. Slalom: It appears that when VSA is shut off, stability and traction control are totally off. When VSA is left on, electronic intervention is mild and returns control to the driver readily. The fastest runs, however, proved to be with the system off, allowing the driver to drift the car a bit past each cone. An entertaining ride, but the lack of tire grip, not chassis behavior, remains the limiting factor. Steering is quick, very precise, and offers useful load characteristics.
