Not as refined as others but tough as nails.

My company (land surveying) purchased the base cargo version of this van new as a field vehicle. I’ve maintained it since new. I acquired it when operations shut down because of COVID. It has plenty of power until you hit highway speeds but is adequate then as well. This van has been put through the wringer, well maintained but always carrying a lot of weight and constantly being started and stopped, driven over rough ground, short drives, opening and closing the doors all the time, you name it. I have severely overloaded it with bags of concrete for home renovation projects, etc.. It never complains. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for taxi service, construction, or something like that. It is not as refined as other minivans from the same era, but part of that is probably because it is the cargo version. (No seats in the back, less sound deadening.) I really can’t complain about it otherwise. It has had a few issues over the years such as a bad coil pack, a few vacuum leaks, ABS sensors get dirty and throw codes sometimes. All minor. It is the perfect vehicle for me because I am doing major renovations on my home. I can fit just about anything I need in it and it is way more convenient than a pickup, because of the side doors and the low floor height. It seems very safe as well, being solidly built. I’m very happy with it. Also, considering that the newest ones are are 14 years old now, I see a surprising number of them still on the road. I’m very happy with it. Maybe not the best car to go on a date in, but that is what my other car is for.

2006 Ford Freestar minivan is a great vehicle. The only problem I have is the bench 2nd row seat. It's only comfortable for kids. Adults are very uncomfortable sitting on it.

Having bought a 1995 Windstar 3.8 in 1997, it was tough for us to want to return to Ford for a mini-van. After driving or riding in Toyotas, Dodge & Chrysler, we felt the new Freestars offered the most amenities, nicest ride (smooth) and...after 11 years, Ford would certainly get it right. In my opinion they did. We bought the van used with 33500 miles. Smooth shifting plenty of power with the 4.2 engine. The leather seats and 6 disc CD changer were added nice features. Mileage so far with a combination of highway/town driving has stayed at 21.4 MPG avg. Unfortunately Ford has decided that '07 is the last year for their mini-van...too bad, they have finally made a great mini-van.

I drive a company issued 3.9L cargo with maybe 200 pounds of extra weight in the rear. The driving dynamics are odd to say the least. It tends to stay on center, but it does not like to turn. The ride is smooth, but noisy. Combined gas mileage is 20 MPG, which is not too much of an improvement coming from a full size Ford E250 with 5.4L V8 that got 14 MPG on average. On quality, they painted the hood support rod to the hood and paint was damaged. At least I won't see it that often.

I believe the Freestar is underrated. This van is a workhorse. People hauler and item hauler love it.
