Dealership Sales Review

Jim Click Automall with footnotes
Written by t_e on 07/25/2007

In May of 2006, after having performed extensive research, decided to purchase a 2006 Hyundai Sonata prior to deploying. I went to JC Eastside because of their proximity to my base. During my first visit, the salesman could not answer any of my questions about the car and freely admitted that I knew more about the car because he never read the manual. I ended up speaking with Scott, the manager, three days later (after I having been told that there were no Sonatas in the REGION that met my criteria) only to discover that there was in fact a car on the lot that met my criteria (color was always negotiable). Scott called me at home and we reached a verbal understanding for the car. While driving to the dealership, the radio played a Jim Click add that stated "With the purchase of ANY NEW car at ANY Jim Click dealership, the buyer will receive a $1000 COSTCO gift card." When I called Scott to ensure he had the card and/or paperwork available, he told me that the card was not included in our verbal agreement. We argued and I told him that the card was a "deal breaker" which he told me he was NOT going to give me unless I negated the previous agreement. I told him that he could not pick and choose the options to include especially since the ad clearly stated "with the purchase of ANY NEW car..." In short, the deal was called off because he would not include the card. I went to the Jim Click dealership at the AUTOMALL that had more inventory, but again gave me hassle with the COSTCO card. JC AUTOMALL gave me the card only after I threatened to have the radio station fax a transcript of the ad to the dealership and to cancel the deal (after having been there for FIVE hours) if not honored. FOOTNOTE #1: Enroute to my deployment, I met a corporate member of COSTCO and explained how the dealership used the COSTCO card as a negotiation tool. He became VERY ANGRY and told me that he was contacting their attorneys to see if Jim Click was doing anything against THEIR contract. According to the COSTCO corporate member, when COSTCO agrees to such a deal, it is with the understanding that the company offering the cards do nothing to disparage COSTCO's reputation. I told him that it made me suspect that either COSTCO or the dealership offered an incentive NOT to include the card in deals. He gave me his private number and told me to call him if my card did not arrive. My wife received the card while I was deployed, and she told me that soon afterwards, Jim Click dealerships began offering other gift cards. FOOTNOTE #2: Mr. Jim Click, the owner of the dealerships, loves the military and offers military members free routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations etc.) so this is a review of his dealership and not him.
