- Tiny back seat is essentially useless
- Limited trunk space with small opening
- Some controls are awkward to use
What's new
- 1LE Track Performance package no longer offered on four- or six-cylinder models
- Part of the sixth Camaro generation introduced for 2016
Overview
The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro is one of only three cars keeping the old-school muscle car segment alive. The Camaro — along with its chief rivals, the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang — takes the traditional hallmarks of this specialized segment and updates them for a modern audience. You still get the pulse-pounding acceleration provided by the muscle cars of old, but now with a high-tech interior and elevated handling performance.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 2dr Coupe (6.2L 8cyl S/C 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.93 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.
Monthly estimates based on costs in Virginia

Camaro ZL1
vs

Avg. Midsize Car
The Chevy puts a premium on a sporty driving experience — so much so that it's almost at the detriment to its everyday drivability. The sleek styling creates short windows that impede outward visibility, while both trunk space and cabin storage are the most meager in the class. If practicality is a consideration for your next car purchase, the Ford and Dodge offer more usable space. We also think the Mustang drives just as well as the Camaro on a set of twisty mountain roads. For more about the Chevy's strengths and pitfalls, check out Edmunds' expert evaluation below.

Performance
9.5/10
How does the Camaro ZL1 drive? The superpowered ZL1 dominates all areas of performance. It's a multifaceted sports car that's equally capable on a drag strip, a road course or your local boulevard. The optional 10-speed automatic transmission is wonderfully behaved no matter the task. You might have a tough time choosing between a ZL1 or a Corvette.
The V8 produces awesome acceleration, including an 11.8-second quarter-mile pass in our testing, but the tractability of its power might be more impressive. This is a smooth, responsive engine that's just as happy to idle in stop-and-go traffic as it is to embarrass exotic cars that cost twice as much. Wide and sticky tires provide high cornering limits, and the Camaro's balanced handling makes it pretty easy to get a feel for its limits.

Comfort
7.0/10
How comfortable is the Camaro ZL1? The ZL1 retains decent civility for a sport coupe. The Recaro seats are soft and comfortable, and the large bolsters have good lateral support when you're cornering. Alas, lumbar support and adjustment are lacking, and those with broader shoulders might experience some upper-back strain during a long drive.
The ride quality is firm but not harsh. The suspension mitigates impacts well enough to stop your head from getting tossed around, but you'll feel most road imperfections. The adaptive suspension's three settings feel distinct and can be changed independently of the drive mode.

Interior
6.5/10
How’s the interior? Not surprisingly, the Camaro ZL1 comes up short in this category. In terms of outward visibility, it's kind of like driving a blue UPS mailbox. The narrow windshield, tall doors and slit of a rear window make for massive blind spots. You have to rely heavily on your mirrors and instrumentation — not to mention your own intuition.
The Camaro's controls are easy to learn, and getting in and out isn't too bad. But you're better off pretending the Camaro is a two-seater. Rear leg- and headroom are almost nonexistent.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? It might not look high-tech, but the ZL1 boasts some seriously advanced features. The configurable stability control and optional video data recorder, for instance, are pretty cool and can enhance your fun on track days. As for the more basic stuff, the 8-inch touchscreen's simple layout doesn't take long to learn, and it reacts quickly to your inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support comes standard. The entertainment screen appears to be angled downward, and though this doesn't impact usability, it sure looks weird.
Storage
5.5/10
How’s the storage? The Camaro coupe's 9.1 cubic feet of trunk space is the smallest you'll find among domestic counterparts. The tiny trunk opening has a high liftover height too. Big luggage is tricky to fit, so you'll want to pack light. Interior storage is minimal. The cupholders and door pockets are small, and the center console barely fits a modern phone. The back seats, though useless for humans, make for a decent place to store items. Just don't plan on taking much with you.
Fuel Economy
7.0/10
How economical is the Camaro ZL1? The EPA rates the automatic-equipped ZL1s at 16 mpg combined (13 city/21 highway). The manual-transmission version gets 16 mpg combined (14 city/20 highway). Our automatic-equipped ZL1 returned 20.5 mpg on our 115-mile test route and 14.2 mpg over the duration of its stay, landing within its EPA rating. The result is average for high-performance competitors.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Camaro ZL1 a good value? The speed-to-dollar ratio here is unmatched. You'll find German sports cars with nicer-looking and better-assembled interiors, but they're slower. The domestic competitors come close, but they lack the ZL1's sophisticated performance-enhancing hardware. Paying around $70,000 for a Camaro may be shocking, but the ZL1 matches its highest-performing competition from Ford and Dodge. More impressively, the ZL1 delivers performance and a suite of sophisticated tech features.
Wildcard
10.0/10
Often cars with this level of power and handling prowess can feel unusable or numb at normal speeds. Not the ZL1. Thanks to its many advanced features, its many capabilities and performance are accessible and approachable for all types of drivers. This is an extraordinarily well-rounded sport coupe.
You can be a hooligan in the ZL1 if you want. Burnouts and powerslides are just a gas pedal smash away, and its exhaust blares terrific sounds. It also buttons up nicely when you need it to. But no matter where you go, or how fast you get there, you always feel like you're driving something special.

Which Camaro does Edmunds recommend?
If you're considering a Camaro ZL1, odds are your priority is all-out performance. Since it comes with almost every available feature, we'd only add the ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance package. It offers sharper handling and a performance and data recorder so you can show all of your friends your on-track exploits.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro video
MARK TAKAHASHI: Cars mean a lot of different things to different people. Personally, I prioritize fun over all else. But I also spend like a drunken sailor, so I can't really afford something like a C8 Corvette, or my dream car, a Mercedes AMG GT. My budget is closer to the average transaction price of 40 grand. So where does that leave me? Well hope is on the horizon because there's more fun choices under 40K than you think.
But before that, hit Like and Subscribe below, and head over to edmunds.com/sellmycar to get some cash so you can afford some of these bad boys.
Pony cars are pretty beefy these days. You get a lot of bang for your buck when it comes to horsepower. Seriously, guys? If you ask me though, it ain't a muscle car unless it has a V8. The Chevrolet Camaro SS is most certainly fun, and comes in just shy of our $40,000 limit. For the money, you get a 455 horsepower 6.2 liter V8, a six speed manual, sharp handling, and impressive acceleration. What you don't get is decent outward visibility. Seriously, it's like looking through a mail slot.
Now if you want the same thrills, but want to see where you're going, you should check out my favorite, Ford Mustang GT. It's a bit less expensive, too, which means you can even opt in the automatic transmission and stay under the $40,000 limit, unlike the Camaro. But seriously, you should learn to drive stick if you're going this route.
The Dodge Challenger RT, by comparison, is an elegant muscle car for a more civilized age. It's bigger and more comfortable, but it also makes less power than the Camaro or Mustang, and doesn't handle as sharply either.
[CAR ENGINE RUMBLING]
Like the Mustang, you can add the automatic transmission and stay under budget. And in this case, yeah, it kind of makes sense. Oh, and if you want the convenience of four doors, the Charger is essentially the same car. See? So you can have a family and still have fun.
If you're looking for something more new school than muscle car, we've got the latest batch of hot hatchbacks. Considering that these have the potential for much better fuel economy, they could even be better bets for those on a budget.
The Volkswagen GTI is all new for 2022, and is our current favorite. With 241 horsepower, zippy handling, and plenty of space for people and cargo, it's easy to see why. Now, we're not too hot on the new infotainment interface. And it's not quite as powerful as the next hatches on the list, but there is the Golf R that has more power and all wheel drive. But, it's disqualified for price.
The Honda Civic Type R is another great choice, but you better try and get one now. The Civic has been redesigned for 2022, and the new Type R is still a ways out. There are a handful of last Gen Type Rs out there, somewhere? It may look a little goofy, but the 306 horsepower output is a pretty solid apology.
The Hyundai Veloster N is a little more funky than goofy looking, and it should be a hell of a lot easier to find one for sale than the Civic. With 275 horsepower, it's not as punchy as the Honda. And the ride can be downright punishing at times. But for five grand less, you've got to expect some compromises somewhere, right?
And we have reviews and comparisons of all of these hatchbacks so you can see videos of those here, or here, or maybe here. By the way, if you're selling a Type R, hit me up in the comments below.
Now to our section about coupes, known to pedants and our friends across the pond as coupés. I can do this all day. And now, for the poster child. For motoring fun, the Mazda MX5 Miata. This pint size little drop top is just ridiculously fun to toss into corners, or go cruising, or just blast down the highway. It kind of does everything really well. As the only convertible on the list, the Miata is one of the purest cars out there.
Now, the specs and performance numbers may not be all that impressive, but I guarantee you, once you get in a Miata, it is the best way to inject dopamine straight into your noggin. What's better, even in the top trim, it comes in under $40,000.
For around the same money as the Miata, you can also get the redesigned 2022 Subaru BRZ, or its sister from another Mr., the Toyota GR 86. They're also on the weak side, but still potent enough to have some fun with. If I were to make one suggestion, it'd be to use the cheapest tires you could find because it's one of the easiest and funnest cars to drift at low speeds, not that we suggest that you actually drift though. Wink. Remember to drift responsibly, though, closed course, professional driving, all that stuff.
There are some honorable mentions to add, too. We've finally got a new Nissan Z on the way, and we're expecting it to start right in the 40 grand neighborhood. There's also a redesigned Subaru WRXTI over the horizon. And for less patient shoppers, the Mini John Cooper Works hardtop two door, and larger Kia Stinger, are worthy of consideration.
So there you have it. Maybe this wasn't the fun under 40 video you searched for-- don't want to know-- but, you can indeed have fun under 40 grand. Do you agree with my list? Are there any you think that deserve to be included that weren't on this list? Well, I don't care what you think. This is my video.
I kid. Let us know in the comments below, in your usual civilized tone. Thanks for watching. And don't forget to hit Like and Subscribe, and head over to edmunds.com for the latest news, reviews, and information on any of these vehicles.

Compare the Chevrolet Camaro
Chevrolet Camaro vs. Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger is the most old-school of the three muscle cars on sale today. Given its ponderous handling, this big cruiser is most comfortable traveling in a straight line. And it's equipped to do so, with a comfortable ride and range of powerful engines. The Chevy is undoubtedly the sportier of the two.
Chevrolet Camaro vs. Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang strikes an ideal balance between the Challenger's comfort-oriented approach and the Camaro's sporty nature. The Mustang is pleasant to drive on the road, but it's also equipped to tackle twisty roads with aplomb. Its expansive windows aid in outward visibility, making it easier to drive than the Camaro. If it were our money, we'd plunk down cash for the Ford.
Chevrolet Camaro vs. Cadillac CT5
The Cadillac CT5 might seem like a left-field pick — it's a far more expensive midsize luxury sedan, after all — but it has a lot in common with the Chevy. Both vehicles are built on the same rear-wheel-drive platform, and even share a supercharged V8 in the Camaro ZL1 and CT5-V Blackwing trims. Think of the CT5 as a Camaro for the junior exec.
