Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsNot particularly quick, but then again this car is about fuel economy, not power. Engine revs high but never has much punch. Shifts at 6,700 rpm in Drive, will hold acceleration in gear to 7,000-rpm rev limiter in Manual mode. Engine shuts off when you stop, then you nudge the throttle to fire it back up. Quickest run came without power-braking at start line. Manual shifting is via console lever (pull back for downshifts). Does not blip throttle for quick downshifts.
Braking commentsSurprisingly firm pedal. Minimal nose dive and hardly any side-to-side motion under braking. Very consistent stopping distances. First stop was 116 feet and shortest was third stop at 115 feet. Longest stop was fourth at 117 feet.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Where's the steering feel? Just an understeering plow-fest around the skid pad. The stability system was abrupt in its transitions from cutting throttle to reengaging it, so you might have pedal floored with no power, then suddenly power would reappear, making it difficult to stay on cornering arc. Slalom: Light, effortless steering, soft and floppy suspension and low-grip tires. Though I remember the LaCrosse handling better than this. Main culprit is no doubt the Michelin Energy Saver tires, but the eAssist hardware is heavy and the suspension calibration is particularly soft.
