2012 BMW Z4 - Edmunds Ratings

2012 BMW Z4 sDrive35is (3.0L 6-cyl. Twin-turbo 7-speed Automated Manual)
Date Driven: 8/17/2010 (2011 s-drive35is)
Performance Shifts from the seven-speed DCT arrive lightning-quick en route to a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds. Launch control mode produces slightly slower results.
Driving Dynamics Steering lacks the communication we expect from a BMW. In sport modes the Z4 is flighty and nervous in the slalom. It's hard to ever feel connected to this car. Brake feel is solid and brings it to a complete stop from 60 mph in just 105 feet.
Ride Comfort The Z4 is a sports-minded convertible, and as such the ride is stiff. It crashes over freeway expansion joints but is rather compliant over flat sections. Seat comfort does a lot to compensate for the suspension.
Quietness Compared to soft-top convertibles it is reasonably quiet. But any removable top is still a detriment when compared to a true fixed-top vehicle. Tire and wind noise are somewhat invasive.
Ergonomics Ergonomics aren't the specialty of this 2-seat convertible. It's snug all around. As a result, audio and A/C controls are almost too close to long-armed drivers. Others will find it acceptable.
Visibility Extremely long hood makes it difficult to judge front dimensions. And a small rear window limits visibility in that direction. Drop the top and the rearward view improves expectedly.
Seat Access & Space The Z4 sits low to the ground, making it difficult for some to enter and exit the vehicle. Shoulder room is adequate with two adults. Leg- and headroom are plentiful, even for those over 6 feet tall.
Cargo & Storage Trunk space is limited to a crush-free zone of one carry-on suitcase with the top down. This increases slightly top-up. Beware utilizing this extra space, as the top-lowering mechanism will indiscriminately pancake anything outside the safe zone.
Build Quality BMW build quality is top-notch and an example of how to do it right. The Z4 is no exception. From the heat-resistant leather seats to panel fitment, this car is built with pride.
Convertible Convertible hard top seals tight. The top lifts/lowers in 18 seconds and does so at the push of a button. If we had to knock anything, it is that you need to hold the button and cannot simply press it once to cycle the top.
