Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThe 535i is lively and energetic everywhere in the rev range. The Sport Drive mode produces quick and smooth upshifts and cool, early-onset match-rev downshifts. We baselined our acceleration testing with the traction control on and effectively matched BMW's claim of 5.7 seconds to 60 mph with our own 5.6-second result. With traction control defeated for testing, the car would short-shift to 2nd at the first inkling of wheelspin. I had to resort to manual-shift mode for the ideal launch and it worked beautifully, with a little scratch off the line that was easily modulated with the throttle. With the twin-turbo six, this car doesn't need a V8 anymore.
Braking ratingExcellent
Braking commentsSome ABS vibration, but only enough to let you know it's working. Consistently short and drama-free stops from the first to the last. The shortest stop occurred on the third attempt.
Handling ratingExcellent
Handling commentsSkid pad: Amazing level of grip and poise for what otherwise feels like a rather large car. The active antiroll bars are obviously at work here, keeping the 535i remarkably flat and neutral. Eventually, understeer sets in, but dramatic (photo-friendly) oversteer is just a toe-tap away. Slalom: This car is amazingly adept in the transitions, shifting weight without upsetting its course. It holds its line without steering correction. In the end, it feels more athletic than it has a right to and comes off feeling like a smaller 3 Series.
