Bentley Mulsanne vs. the competition
2018 Bentley Mulsanne
2016 Rolls-Royce Phantom
Bentley Mulsanne vs. Rolls-Royce Phantom
The Rolls-Royce Phantom Sedan is the most direct competitor to the Mulsanne. It costs about $100,000 more, but at this level we suspect cost won't be much of an issue for most buyers. Both the Bentley and the Rolls are renowned for their impeccable craftsmanship, a good portion of which is done by hand.
Bentley Mulsanne vs. Mercedes-Benz Maybach
The Maybach sedan comes in at about half the price of the Bentley. It also holds the upper hand when it comes to technology for advanced safety features and automated driving. But at this level of wealth, does that really matter? What matters is exclusivity, and the Mulsanne holds a definite advantage.
Bentley Mulsanne vs. Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II
The Rolls-Royce Ghost looks the part of a premium luxury sedan, and it most certainly is. One thing that may affect its cachet is the knowledge that it's based on a BMW 7 Series. But on the flip side, it also drives as well as the big Bimmer and benefits from newer technology than the Mulsanne. Both the Ghost and the Mulsanne have head-turning presence, regal interiors and exemplary comfort.
The 2018 Bentley Mulsanne is the most luxurious and exclusive vehicle Bentley produces, and that's saying something. It's also one of the most labor-intensive cars in production, making only sparing use of automation and requiring 500 man-hours of work. Most of that time is spent perfecting and polishing the Mulsanne's wood, metal and leather interior. All of that care and craftsmanship comes with a price, and the big Bentley carries a steep price tag.
An extended-wheelbase version of the Mulsanne is also available and adds about 10 inches to the overall length of the car, and that is allocated to rear legroom. Beyond the extra space, the extended-wheelbase and the standard-length Mulsanne share largely the same equipment and options.
The Mulsanne is powered by Bentley's 6.75-liter V8, which delivers 505 horsepower to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is a rather thirsty 13 mpg combined (11 city/18 highway), but the Mulsanne is focused on luxury rather than efficiency. Buyers looking to arrive in style with slightly more haste can opt for the Mulsanne Speed, which bumps up the engine's output to 530 hp.
Standard equipment for the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne is extensive, including four-zone automatic climate control, 14-way power-adjustable front seats and eight-way power-adjustable rear seats (all with heating), an eight-speaker infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, air ride suspension, LED headlights, a sunroof and, of course, acres of driven wood, leather and metal.
Optional extras for the Mulsanne add some tremendous upgrades. The interior can be upgraded with massage and ventilation for front and rear outboard seats, as well as airline-style reclining seats for the EWB (the one major equipment difference between the standard Mulsanne and the Extended Wheelbase), a chilled drink cabinet with custom crystal, two 10.5-inch tablets that deploy from the front seatbacks and a 2,200-watt, 20-speaker audio system. Outside, the Bentley can be fitted with a chrome radiator shell, stainless-steel door pillars, the iconic Flying B hood ornament, adaptive cruise control and front corner-view cameras.
But in truth, thanks to Bentley's Mulliner department, the Mulsanne's customization options are nearly limitless. Beyond aesthetic customizations such as paint color, custom veneers, custom inlays and marquetry, and custom embroidery, Bentley will also tailor storage and other options. Want a built-in humidor or jewelry box? Bentley will be only too happy to oblige.
There's very little competition at this level of quality and luxury. Buyers who want only the best, regardless of cost, and are unwilling to entertain compromise will definitely want to give the Mulsanne a look.
