Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThe A4's powerplant offers even, refined power dilevery, but it is a little soft at low RPMs. The transmission upshfits when it wants to, even in manual mode. Thanks to the Quattro all-wheel-drive tire spin and traction were not a problem.
Braking ratingPoor
Braking commentsWe noted very firm pedal feel with excellent feedback, but the ABS noise and vibration were beyond what one would expect from a car in this class. The pedal got a little jittery at the end of the stop, and the numbers were dissapointing at best. However, it should be noted that this is a pre-production vehicle and the production version may be better.
Handling ratingGood
Handling commentsBetween the A4's innability to hold a gear in manual mode and not having a lot of low end torque, it was tough to pull off a good time in the slalom. The best results came from simply hammering the throttle an steering the car, leaving the Quattro system to figure everything out. Steering feel was excellent and roll control was also quite good.
