Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsUpshifts feel a bit lazy in auto mode, but are crisp in manual mode. It's very hard to launch because the DSG lets the engine rev to 3,000 rpm before engaging the clutch, which creates traction issues. It will be interesting to see what the 3.2 engine and quattro all-wheel drive can do in this body configuration.
Braking ratingVery Good
Braking commentsWe noted very subtle ABS noise/vibration. Stops were very straight with good pedal feel and progressive response. Very slight fade became a problem after the third run, but the pedal still felt good.
Handling ratingVery Good
Handling commentsThe A3 has quick steering and relatively minor body roll (this car has the sport suspension option). It's easy to predict, but the back end did want to come around at speed. It was right at the top of second gear running through the slalom, so we had to run in third gear to avoid the rev limiter, but this hurt power/torque for accelerating out of the cones.
