Your first order of business is for a cooling system pressure test and a cylinder leak down test. If you have a blown head gasket one or both of these tests will result in a positive. Short of those two, do you have coolant in your oil and/or oil in your coolant? Either would also indicate a potential head gasket issue.
Hello, I have a 1992 dodge caravan 3.3 L V6 that won't maintain it's idle. The car starts but won't run unless I keep my foot on the accelerator. I also noticed there was water coming out of the tail pipe (that may just be condensation, it was cold out)... I am worried the head gasket may be blown. Please Help!
1992 Dodge caravan on 2nd transmission. Goes into lockup mode when it rains. No problem in dry weather. Any ideas? Some faulty sensor or faulty trans control module? Thanks.
I would agree with farout here; I think they are all the same. And I just bought an 08 Grand Caravan. And, I would add that I don't believe the Japanese cars are more reliable. However, I do believe that the service departments at the Japanese dealers do a much better job to give the appearance of reliability. They really seem to emphasize fixing it right the first time. The priority ... Read More
The first build of 1992 body controllers for this vehicle have a service bulletin on them to scrap them for this exact issue. My guess would be this is your problem.
Sound like you are enjoying your Odyssey. Good for you. I hope you travel many happy miles in it. Yes I am, and the same to you. Minivans are all to overlooked when it comes to great safe economicial family transportation. I have owned 4 dodges and probably will own more in the future I've done probably 350K+ in them and never got stranded. One trany replacement and no engine problem2. ... Read More
We have replaced the transmission twice in the last 6 years. Problems started this way: First it would seem to down shift. Secondly it would be really hard to put into park. Thirdly, was forced (I guess) into a gear and would not start up again. We do beleive we have it in park (it will not move) but it still won't start. I have been told that I need to ... Read More
The Intrepid came out in 1992 as a 1993 model. I had a '93 Intrepid bought back by Chrysler under owner's arbitration. It led to a worst '94 Dodge GC and the last product I'll ever buy from that company. The Caravan has been around since 1984, not 2001. I had a 1993 Eagle Vision, the sister to the Intrepid. We kept it until 2004 when we bought our Civic. The ... Read More

I have been following this forum on and off since last September. That was when I purchased a 2006 Odyssey EX-L. I also own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES and a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica Touring. In my opinion the Odyssey was a better vehicle than the similar DC offerings. The real question in this forum is how much more the Honda is worth than the DC vans. When you look at ... Read More
During geophysics field school, we took some 2004 Dodge Grand Caravans on our trip. At high rpm, the engine sounds like crap (raspy and weak) and the power drops off rapidly. The same thing happens to my mom's Intrepid. They feel anaemic going up hills. I had to try and redline the thing just to pass on the highway, and I only had one other person in the van. It had ... The flexible brake line has collasped internally. You should consider the flex lines on both sides.
does any one know why the front brakes would stick on my van after the master cylinder and calipers were changed just the right side brake
Dusty, The TPS reads within specs on Voltage checks ect. I did have another known good PCV and reading is the same.
Fifteen is low for an idle vacuum, in my opinion. I'd continue to check for a vacuum leak. A bad PCV valve can cause this. If not vacuum related, this could also be caused by a defective Throttle Position Sensor. Regards, Dusty
I have a 3.3L Grand Caravan with a high idle at startup and throughout the driving range. This is what I have checked and replaced so far: Installed brand new AIS Motor: the connections are good to the AIS harness: there are no shorts shown with ohmeter at the harness: throttle body has been cleaned and throttle body gasket replaced: I have checked for vacuum leaks and can't find any: Vacuum is ... I am the original owner of a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan SE with 98k+ miles. While my wife was driving home today she noticed all the lights on the instrument panel were out and the gauges for speed, fuel level, etc were indicating zero. I read in an earlier message re: a 1992 Voyager, that the problem was traced to a bad computer. Indicators for "Check Engine Soon" and "ABS" were ... Read More
I was impressed with most of it, some things bothered me..i.e..the VCM switching almost constantly from 6 to 3 cylinders (or at least the ECO light telling me that). I love the ECO light it makes me feel good. Like I'm saving money. The maintenance minder is cool too. But I'm a techno geek!! ANY car is good for 200,000 miles I drove 2 dodge caravans 1988 and 1992 120,000 + ... Read More
I've got a 99 plymouth minivan that had a similar problem, as well as a 1990 dodge dynasty that did the same thing. What is happening is the computer is detecting a transmission error and going into "limp in" mode. What this basically means is that the transmission shifts into 2nd gear and stays there. The transmission is electronically controlled transmission, controlled by 2 shift sensors. I'm not exactly sure where ... Read More
Sounds like your car is in "limp mode". I did the same thing with my old dodge. I did the "do-it-your-self" fix first, which was to simply replace the trany sensors, mine had two, one is the speed sensor control and the other is the shift sensor. It only cost me $17 for both. You don't have to change out both but I just replaced both cause I figured if one ... Read More
Hello, I'm actually writing for my sis who's comp is down at this time. She just bought a 1992 dodge caravan (automatic). She says that SOMETIMES the vehicle will not shift from 2nd to 3rd, and also sometimes it will only go into reverse as well. She says that it doesnt happen all the time, but when it does, if they turn the vehicle off and on 3 times it (resets) ... Read More

We are selling our 1992 Grand Caravan LE. This was a very good van for us. Never had the Tranny problems everyone eludes to. But I have to say I am very diligent in the area of maintenance. I service my own vehicles even though I can afford for others to work on them. I don't trust the work people do today. My wife wanted a new van so we got ... Read More

I have been driving An AWD 1992 Caravan for over 174,000 mile. During the time I have found it to be excellent. Living in Michigan, I have had it in lots of snow, ice and bad weather. I have never been stuck and it has been tested. If I get another Dodge, it will be AWD. However, I have had so many problems over the years (including three tramissions, brake problems...) ...
