I have a 2001 Cadillac Catera and I have replaced the battery, battery cables, alternator, and checked the fuses. What's happening is the alternator is not recharging the battery. I have had the alternator and battery tested and both are good but the alternator is only putting out about 3 volts. Any idea on what the issue might be? I'm going crazy trying to figure this one out!

So you have an 01? I was beginning to think, I had the only 01. Blinking is the first sign of the computer warning you. About how many miles do you have on this Catera? How long ago, if ever, did you replace the crank position sensor/mass air flow? Did you leave it on the side of the road? Were you not worried about being abducted by aliens?

The timing belt is designed to last 100,000 miles, The first Catera's were failing early. 2000 and 2001 should be fine. The belt breaking will crash into the valves and require head work. In Europe many cars are serviced at the 100,000 and extensive work is done. While your there you can replace the water pump, tensioner, all the pulleys/bearings. Cadillac charges $3,500 and the cheapest I've seen is $2,500. Many ... Read More

If that time doesn't come, I'll take my business elsewhere. However, the way in which Cadillac has treated those of you unfortunate enough to buy a Catera is pathetic. Two good used car price guides are Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and NADA. KBB private party value for that car and mileage is excellent = $6,125 good = $5,650 and fair = $5,075. NADA clean trade-in value is $5,250 and clean retail is $6,850. If it has a moon roof the values would be slightly higher. That gives you a good idea of a range price wise. I don't know how ... Howdy,I use an allen wrench, 3/16 or 1/4 I believe to undo the oil plug for an oil change. That worked until I got the appropo torx bit as spenny suggests. The plug takes an "o" ring bye the way. Which may have been nicked by the Wal-mart space technicians. Hence the oil leak. Also I have found that the larger ( Fram part no. ) 3980 oil filter cartridge works ... Read More

The catera oil drain plug requires a torx socket bit (either a T40 or T45 - can't remember for sure) but it is not an expensive tool and I would think that Wal Mart would get one out of their automotive department for their shop if they needed to.
