LOS ANGELES — The BMW i3 Concept Coupe, which underscores the potential for the i model range, debuts at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

BMW has not revealed production plans for the i3 Concept Coupe, but says this study shows the "development process for getting the first ever all-electric model from the BMW i brand ready for series production and demonstrates the potential for conceivably extending the model range." It is a coupe version of the earlier BMW i3.

A BMW i4 had been rumored to appear at the L.A. auto show, along with media reports that a BMW i5 is also in the works.

The first vehicles from BMW's new i division are expected to be launched on the market in 2013 and 2014. They are the i3 electric hatchback and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. BMW has been ramping up the drumbeat for the i3 and i8, rolling out the BMW i Born Electric Tour, which was hosted by the actress Uma Thurman, earlier this month in New York City.

The i3 Concept Coupe's roof line and the latest interpretation of the BMW's i "stream flow" design are highlights of the car shown in LA. It also stands out with a Solar Orange metallic exterior paint treatment created for the concept, accented by high-gloss black touches on the hood, roof and trunk.

Lightweight carbon fiber is used for the body, while the chassis is made chiefly of aluminum, BMW noted.

The new i3 Concept Coupe features the familiar rear-mounted electric motor rated at 170 horsepower and single-speed transmission. Lithium-ion storage cells are located under the floor. The concept has a range of about 100 miles and has a maximum speed of 56 mph.

BMW says the curious should pay special attention to the concept's cabin, since it "illustrates how the cockpit design has evolved as it is readied for series production."

There are two individual rear seats in the BMW i3 Concept Coupe and lots of natural products in the cabin, including leather, wood, wool and "other renewable raw materials," BMW says.

Edmunds says: BMW continues to experiment with its new i models, as the German sub-brand continues its evolution.
