LOS ANGELES — The redesigned 2014 Kia Forte sedan debuted on Wednesday at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show with a sleeker look and no high-end SX version.

The 2014 Kia Forte sedan goes on sale in the first quarter of 2013.

The Forte sedan will be available in just two variants: LX and EX. The 2013 Kia Forte SX sedan starts at $20,075, including a $775 destination charge. It is the most expensive and one of the least fuel-efficient Forte sedans. It is equipped with a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine that Kia has deleted for the 2014 model year.

The base 2014 Forte LX sedan gets a 148-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic transmission. The 2014 Forte EX gets a standard 173-hp direct-injected 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

Kia did not provide fuel economy projections on either engine, but it is expected that the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine will approach the 40 mpg mark. In comparison, the outgoing 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission on the outgoing SX model returns 23 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway.

Kia promises that the Forte will be loaded with "premium amenities." The base model gets standard steering wheel-mounted audio controls, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, power accessories and air-conditioning. Standard Forte EX features include remote keyless entry, a rear back-up camera, sliding center armrest and cooling glovebox.

The redesigned Forte is closely related to the Kia Cerato and blends styling elements from the Kia Optima and Rio.

The 2014 Forte's wheelbase is 2 inches longer than the outgoing model and the chassis is lower and wider than the previous model.

Edmunds says: Forthcoming key details, such as pricing and fuel economy, will help provide a clearer picture of the 2014 Kia Forte sedan, especially against such competitors as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

  • ewww. nope. The last one has nice clean styling... This just looks like a chromed over Civic. Hate to say it, but bring back the last one! It still had a few years left in the platform.
