WOLFSBURG, Germany — The Volkswagen Golf GTD, a hot diesel hatchback, is set for the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

The performance Golf GTD looks the part, with 17-inch wheels, side skirts and a jaunty tartan pattern on the sport seats.

Volkswagen of America told Edmunds a decision has not been made on whether to bring the Golf GTD to the U.S. The Golf GTD has been a mainstay in Europe and this is a new and more potent version. The first Golf GTD debuted in 1982.

"The Golf GTD has never been imported to the U.S.," said Mark Gillies, a Volkswagen of America spokesman, in a phone conversation on Wednesday. "No decision as yet on whether to bring it here."

The Golf GTD goes on sale in Germany in June at the U.S. equivalent of $38,698. The four-door hatchback is equipped with a 184-horsepower turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine. Top speed is said to be 143 mph.

Sprinting from zero to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds when equipped with the manual six-speed transmission, the Golf GTD is also available with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as an option.

Combined fuel economy on the European cycle is 56 mpg when the car is equipped with the manual transmission, said Volkswagen.

Edmunds says: At this point, you'll have to admire the Volkswagen Golf GTD from afar.
