FARMINGTON HILLS, Michigan — Nissan today revealed here its 2014 Rogue compact crossover. The second-generation Rogue, on an all-new platform shared with its alliance partner Renault, goes on sale in November at a starting price of $23,850 including an $860 destination charge.
Although the 2014 Rogue has a 106.5-inch wheelbase that is just 0.7 inch longer than the first-generation model — and actually is a half-inch shorter overall — the jointly developed Common Module Platform (CMP) provides enough interior room to allow the new Rogue to offer an optional third row of seats, a first for the Rogue at a time when most compact-crossover competitors such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 continue strictly with two-row layouts or have abandoned the feature.
Nissan executives and engineers said the all-new CMP architecture allows a "right-sized" footprint yet maximized interior room to the point where the new third-row seat was possible. Its new sheet metal, meanwhile, was designed to impart a more premium and substantial perception.
"Rogue's bold, dynamic new styling is going to generate tremendous attention," said Fred Diaz, Nissan North America, Inc. vice president of sales and marketing, in a release. "And once buyers take a look inside at the roomy, premium interior and experience the long list of affordable technologies, we know they'll be delighted," he added.
The 2014 Rogue's chassis, styling and interior may be all-new, but the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is carried over — right down to its 170-horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque output — as is its continuously variable automatic transmission. It will be the only powertrain setup, although Nissan said improvements to the CVT automatic and other fuel-efficiency enhancements are projected to deliver the class' best highway fuel economy rating of 33 mpg for a front-drive model. City fuel economy for the front-driver is projected at 26 mpg. All-wheel drive again is optional for any of the three 2014 Rogue's trim levels: S, SV and SL.
Nissan has jumped wholeheartedly into advanced driver-aid technology and the 2014 Rogue will be chock full of standard and optional electronic features. Options include full LED headlights, Nissan's Around View Monitor exterior camera system and Moving Object Detection, as well as available blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning.
Inside, the 2014 Rogue will feature standards such as the "zero-gravity" front seats recently deployed for the Altima midsize sedan, sliding and reclining for the second-row bench seat, a fancy new cargo-management design in the rear floor, streaming audio and a hands-free messaging function. A navigation system with a 7-inch monitor and voice recognition is optional, as are "quick comfort" fast-heating front seats, leather, automatic climate control and a panoramic sunroof.
Sharing the new CMP architecture with the 2014 Rogue is the Europe-only 2014 Nissan X-Trail, as well as the upcoming new generation of the Nissan Qashqai and, presumably, various future Renault models. The architecture incorporates an independent strut front suspension and independent five-link rear suspension. Although the 2014 Rogue is dimensionally similar to today's model, Nissan's initial specifications did not indicate whether the new platform reduces weight for the 2014 Rogue.
Pricing for the 2014 Rogue tops out at $30,280 for an all-wheel-drive SL, but Nissan did not yet provide pricing for the new Rogue's extensive list of options.
Edmunds says: The Rogue is Nissan's second-best seller and the new-generation 2014 model is amped up to reflect the Rogue's increased prominence in the Nissan showroom.
