FRANKFURT, Germany — Bentley says the U.S. is expected to be a "significant market" for the 521-horsepower 2014 Bentley Continental GT V8 S coupe and convertible models that will be showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

"The V8 S models will go on sale in the first quarter of 2014 and pricing will be available closer to launch," wrote Corey Proffitt, a Bentley U.S. spokesman, in response to an Edmunds query.

The Bentley Continental GT V8 S bumps up the output of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine's performance by 21 horses. The "S" designation stands for "sporting," according to the automaker. The V8 is mated to a close-ratio ZF eight-speed automatic transmission featuring an "S" mode that tunes throttle response and holds gears longer. Variable displacement, in which four of the eight cylinders shut down when cruising, cuts fuel consumption.

The GT V8 S coupe sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 192 mph. The GT V8 S convertible reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 191 mph, according to the automaker.

The V8 S retains the same suspension as the standard Continental, but is lowered and tuned for sportier driving characteristics. The S models also get a unique electronic stability control system that is retuned to allow increased wheel slip at higher speeds and return full engine torque faster after a system intervention.

Exterior cues include an aero-optimized front splitter, side sills and a rear diffuser. The V8 S gets unique 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and special badging.

Options include a sport exhaust package with redesigned silencers, revised pipe architecture and re-tuned mountings.

Edmunds says: It's all about performance as this impressive pair from Bentley commands center stage at the Frankfurt show.
