DETROIT — The 2014 Nissan Versa Note, which replaces the 2013 Versa hatchback, debuted at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Nissan said the 2014 Versa Note will start at around $14,780, including a $790 destination charge, when it goes on sale in the summer.

The 2014 Versa Note undercuts two of its chief rivals, the 2013 Ford Fiesta hatchback and the 2013 Honda Fit. The base 2013 Ford Fiesta S hatchback starts at $14,995, including a $795 destination charge. The base 2013 Honda Fit starts at $16,215, including a $790 destination charge.

Consumers may find the new nomenclature a bit confusing on the Versa Note.

"It replaces the Versa hatchback," explained Dan Bedore, a Nissan North America spokesman, in response to an e-mailed query from Edmunds. "Note is the name in other markets and we are trying to make the global connection and signal it is very different. So the name is Versa Note in the U.S. and Canada. It is Note in Mexico, Japan, Europe and elsewhere."

All Versa Notes will be equipped with a 109-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine linked to either a five-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission.

The hatchback rides on a 102.4-inch wheelbase. Key design cues include large multi-reflector halogen headlights and a wide sweeping grille with a deep front fascia. An optional Divide-N-Hide adjustable floor in the cabin boosts interior versatility.

The Versa Note also can be ordered with Nissan's Around View Monitor system that uses four cameras to help the driver see around the vehicle from multiple angles.

Nissan said full pricing details on the Versa Note will be available closer to launch.

Edmunds says: Nissan gets credit for holding the line on pricing on the 2014 Versa Note.
