2013 Detroit Auto Show: 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe
2013 Detroit Auto Show
What Is It?
2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe
What's Special About It?
If you like the M5 but crave a bit more style, the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is the car for you. The Gran Coupe adds a dose of much-needed attitude to the relatively conservative sedan. And remember, the Gran Coupe is indeed a sedan and not a coupe (confusing, no?). OK, a zoomy-looking sedan. That's the whole point. Mercedes-Benz originally blazed this trail, creating the sinister CLS out of the staid E-Class, and the M6 Gran Coupe takes on that company's CLS63 AMG.
Powered by the same twin-turbo, direct-injected 4.4-liter V8 engine as the M5, the M6 Gran Coupe ought to turn out performance similar to the M5. U.S. customers of the M6 Gran Coupe will have their choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox. Just like the M5. Are you seeing a pattern here?
It's easy to be cynical about the M6 Gran Coupe until you see it in person. It's got the right level of aggression, and the matte-finish paint of the car at the Detroit auto show is killer. No, the nose isn't exactly sexy.
About the only difference between the M6 Gran Coupe and the M5 (beyond styling and content) will be price. Expect to pay a healthy upcharge for the M6 Gran Coupe's sleeker lines.
