2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C gas/electric hybrid 8A)
Was enthusiastic about the hybrid specs when I bought this vehicle (used 50,000 miles). It's clearly not getting the mileage advertised and I drive to maximize the hybrid mileage (a lot of coasting). Note: vehicle will not go into a battery only mode if the OAT is above 90 degrees. Main issue is every time the key is inserted (or start button pushed) it's a crap shoot. How quickly you go … from inserting the key to turning it on makes a difference in the start-up sequence and at different times will give different error messages. Right now it's sitting frozen (locked in park) in the LAS airport parking lot with a steering message possibly because I too quickly went from insert to start. The transmission is clunky and sometimes misses the transition from one mode (battery only, battery charging, engine on, engine off) to the next resulting in uneven acceleration (and one early morning no acceleration until I turned vehicle off completely waited 60 seconds then restarted) and also uneven braking. Doubt it will safely tow the rated towing capacity (or even close) though I did tow a 2000 lb trailer from Washington to Nevada with ample acceleration (generally better than without a trailer). I'm a 35 year pilot/former military and I've flown, driven and floated a lot of complex and quirky vehicles but this car is by far the worst. It looks nice sitting there though.
